Chip Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.) shot par (72-72=144) en route to his first-collegiate top-five finish, while the Navy men's golf team turned in an 18-over par 594 to place third at the 36-hole Carpetbagger Classic held Saturday and Sunday at the par-72 Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana, Md. Navy began Sunday's final round in fourth place among the 15-team field, but shot the third-lowest score (295) of the day to push up to third in the final standings. Navy finished 9 strokes behind tournament-winner Rhode Island and 4 behind second-place Bryant.
Deegan shot par in back-to-back rounds to finish in a four-way tie for third alongside Howard's Marcus Smith (74-70), Youngstown State's Bryan Kordupel (71-73) and Rhode Island's Bryson Richards (69-75). While it was Deegan's first-career top-five finish, it marked the second time in his career he has placed among the top 10 (8th at ODU/OBX Intercollegiate).
Meanwhile, teammates
Owen Huntington (So / Camas, Wash.) and
Keegan Shreves (Sr / Potomac, Md.) closed out the two-day tournament with top-20 finishes. Huntington, who did not compete in the spring opener at the Bash and the Beach, covered the tournament with a 5-over par 149 (75-74) to tie for 16th, while Shreves tallied a pair of 75s to finish 6-over and tied for 20th.
Jack Tarzy (Fr / Medford, N.J.) was just a stroke back in 24th, posting a 2-over par 151 (77-74), while
Benjamin Valdez (So / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed 47th at 12-over (78-78=156).
Tournament Notes
• Rhode Island (288-297=585), the top-ranked team within the field at 178 according to Golfstat, claimed the team title for a second-consecutive year, edging Bryant (300-290=590) by 5 strokes. Rhode Island shot the low round of the tournament on Saturday, tallying a par-288.
• Rhode Island had 3 players finish among the top 20, including 2 who were among the top 3. Brandon Gillis, who shared individual medalist honors a year ago, was denied this year and was forced to settle for second with a 3-under par 141 (70-71). Meanwhile, RIU's Bryson Richards tied for third with his par-144 (69-75).
• Fairleigh Dickinson sophomore Leon Heitz took individual medalist honors with his 4-under par 140 (69-71).
