ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had yet another busy weekend of competition, with the Midshipmen competing in a home regatta and two competitions on the road.
Â
At home, Navy hosted the Jen Harris Team Race, named after Navy Sailing alumnus Capt. Harris, USNA class of 2000. Harris was commissioned Marine Aviation and paid the ultimate sacrifice during a rescue mission in Iraq in 2007, with her courage being an inspiration to the current sailing team and a reminder that Navy's sailors have made a great commitment to their country.

On the water, rain mixed with unstable light winds made Saturday very challenging, as competitors were only able to complete a third of the first round in winds from all directions, but Sunday was a much nicer day, with sunny skies and northwest winds allowing for more races to be completed. Navy's team of juniors
Aubin Hattendorf, Catey Aitken and
Julia Christie, sophomores
Evie Blauvelt,
Linnea Forsberg and
Maggie Schuler and freshman
Ava Farley compiled a 2-5 record on the weekend to finish seventh overall in the eight-team women's event.
Â
The Admiral Moore Team Race, hosted by the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., saw conditions that were conducive for a lot more racing, while ten teams from around the country created a high level of competition. Saturday saw an unusual easterly breeze that led to extremely puffy and shifty winds, as a complete round-robin was completed and Navy advanced to Sunday's Gold-6 round. On the second day, a warm westerly breeze allowed for great racing as Navy advanced to the final four and wound up in third place, posting a 9-8 combined record through all rounds. Sailing for the Midshipmen as skippers were senior
Gavin McJones, sophomore
Cooper Walshe and freshman
Nathan Smith and
Jack Welburn, while the crews were seniors
Colin MacGillivray and
Jonah Hatt, junior
Madeline Smith, sophomore
Ryan Wahba and freshman
Ellie Alex.
Â
Navy's third event of the weekend was the Hanbury Trophy, hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. A 14-team fleet race, the regatta featured teams from the MAISA and SAISA conferences, thus racing was tight and Navy found itself in a three-way battle for the lead most of Saturday with Princeton and NC State. On Sunday, Princeton pulled away to claim the victory though, leaving the Wolfpack in second and the Midshipmen in third, as sophomore
Tanner Kelly and freshman Ella Niehoff teamed up to finish third in the "A" Division while sophomore Rober Ziman and freshman
Margo Cicero were fourth in the "B" division.

Navy returns to action April 1-2, sailing at Cornell's Finger Lakes Women's Team Race in Ithaca, N.Y., as well as the Vietor Trophy at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.
