Cerniglia Wins 165-Pound Title at Franklin & Marshall Open

LANCASTER, Pa. - Senior Andrew Cerniglia (165) compiled a 6-0 record and won three matches over Army wrestlers to place first in his respective weight class at the 11th annual David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday at the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center in Lancaster, Pa.

The Nazareth, Pa., native was one of four mids to place in the tournament that featured over 400 wrestlers from 28 different institutions. The tournament did not have team scoring.

Cerniglia won the fourth tournament title in his career and his first since he was crowned a champion at 157 pounds at the 2022 Bearcat Open. Additionally, he became the eighth Navy wrestler to garner a first-place finish at the Franklin & Marshall Open.

"Andrew Cerniglia maintained a focused wrestling performance and sharp skills throughout today's tournament. He was simply solid in all his matches," said head coach Cary Kolat. "Moving forward, we have to improve our match management. In situations where time is short and we're winning, it's crucial to be strategic about positions. When we are losing with little time left, we need clarity on what we should be looking for."

Cerniglia outscored his six opponents, 73-30, and scored 10 or more points in five matches. He began the tournament with back-to-back wins by technical fall over Army's Ryan Alvarado (17-2, 4:42) and Hofstra's Greyson Harris (17-2, 2:53). He then shut out Donavan Smith of Long Island to win by a 10-0 major decision. The 24th-ranked wrestler in the nation won his second match against an Army wrestler in the quarterfinals with a 6-3 decision over Tanner Craig. Cerniglia's lone win in the tournament over a ranked opponent came in the semifinals, where he defeated No. 26 Joshua Kim of Harvard by an 11-2 major decision. He claimed his third win against the Black Knights in the championship bout, beating Dalton Harkins by a 12-3 major decision.

Danny Wask (174), who entered the tournament ranked 21st in the nation, finished third overall with a 4-1 record. All four of his wins came against EIWA opponents. The freshman has now placed in all three tournaments he has competed in this season.

Wask won his first match by a 16-4 major decision against American's Caleb Campos. He then defeated Dimitri Gamkrelidze of Binghamton by a 4-1 decision after scoring the match-winning takedown with just one second remaining in the final period. His next match against Army's Dillon Sheehy went into sudden victory tied, 1-1. Wask claimed the victory by a 4-1 decision thanks to a takedown with only 15 seconds to go in the first overtime period. After a loss to Campbell's No. 26 Austin Murphy (14-5 major decision), he claimed the third-place match over Drexel's Jasiah Queen by forfeit.

Heavyweights No. 13 Grady Griess and Jamier Ferere both won four matches to place fourth and fifth/sixth, respectively.

Griess started the tournament with a 17-0 (5:00) win by technical fall against Long Island's Aeden Begue. He won his second match by fall (2:55) over Maryland's Joey Schneck. Navy's team captain scored big again in his third victory, defeating Antonio Ramos of Air Force by a 15-1 major decision. Griess then advanced to the semifinals with a win by a 5-2 decision over Army's Austin Kolhofer. He would end the tournament with a pair of losses by decision to Campbell's No. 8 Taye Ghadiali (8-3) and Binghamton's No. 22 Cory Day (5-3) to claim fourth place.

Ferere scored three takedowns in his first win against Lehigh's Karam Chakif to win by a 10-3 decision in the round of 64. He then defeated both Tyler O'Boyle of Franklin & Marshall (1:13) and Chase Horne (6:50) of N.C. State by fall to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Ferere fell in the quarterfinals by fall (1:04) to No. 2 Wyatt Hendrickson of Air Force, but responded with two wins by fall in the consolation bracket. He pinned Sam Sorenson of Army-Prep in just 23 seconds, which was deemed an uncountable win to his overall record due to it being against a non-NCAA opponent. The sophomore advanced to the fifth-place match after pinning Nathan Carnes of Presbyterian College at the 2:57 mark. Ferere would earn fifth/sixth place due to his match against Army's Austin Kolhofer being ruled a no contest.

Ferere is now second on the team in total wins this season with 16. He trails only Griess, who now leads the Mids with 17 victories this season.

Navy will be back in action next Friday and Saturday to wrestle in the 43rd annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Mids will face Oklahoma (3 p.m.) on Friday and South Dakota State (1:30 p.m.) and Wisconsin (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
