BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Navy freshman
Farrah Eike has been named the player and rookie of the week for volleyball in the Patriot League, the league office announced today.
Eike earned the multiple honors for her 27-kill effort in Saturday's five-set victory over Lafayette.
The outside hitter produced a .396 hitting percentage (27 kills, 6 errors, 53 attempts) in the match, ended set one with a kill, concluded set two with back-to-back kills and recorded kills on the final two points of set five. She tallied six kills and a .455 hitting percentage (6-1-11) in the abbreviated fifth set.
The 27 kills are the most in a match by a Patriot League player this season.
That effort also ranks second to the 29 kills posted by Rachel Shropa in 1996 for the most by a Navy freshman since box scores became available in 1995. Eike previously set the school standard for the most kills by a freshman during the rally scoring era (since 2001) when she produced 20 kills on October 4 against Lehigh.
The last time a Mid had at least 27 kills in a match was when Rachel Dougherty had 30 against UMBC on Nov. 6, 2007, and the last time there was at least a 27-kill effort by a Mid in a Patriot League match was when Dougherty had 29 against Holy Cross on Oct. 19, 2007.
Navy will play host to Colgate on Friday and Army on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will be played in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
