ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's rugby team (8-1, 5-1 in the Rugby East) concludes its fall road slate when it battles Queens University of Charlotte (8-1, 5-1 in the Rugby East) on Saturday at Dickson Field in Charlotte, N.C.
The contest will kickoff at noon and can be streamed for free with the links provided on navysports.com.
Any fans attending the match must purchase tickets before attending the game. There will be no cash entry at the door of Dickson Field. LINK to purchase tickets.
"Like we have all season, we will continue to concentrate on ourselves and not worry too much about our opponents," stated director of rugby Gavin Hickie. "We have been on a fantastic journey this fall, we have grown immensely as a team and we are excited to test ourselves on the road one final time this fall season."
Last Time Out: at Kutztown
Navy used a big second half performance to roll past Kutztown 60-17 last Saturday in Kutztown, Pa. With the victory the Midshipmen claimed their third-consecutive Rugby East North Division title.
Neither team could get much going offensively early in the match but the Golden Bears struck first with a try in the 15th minute to take the 7-0 lead. It was the third time this season that an opponent scored first to begin a match against Navy.
With three first half tries; the Midshipmen went into halftime with a 21-17 lead.
Navy's offensive fire power came alive in the second half with five tries from three different players coming off the bench and a pair of penalty kicks from Krieger. The defense also posted a dominant second half as it held Kutztown scoreless.
Bengston Big Day
Senior team captain JD Bengston was the star of the second half in last week's victory over Kutztown. Coming off the bench the Tifton, Ga., native recorded his second-career hat trick. He scored his first try in the 57th minute and added two more in a span of six minutes in the 70th and 76th minute.
Navy Notes
· Navy enters the weekend with a 5-1 record in Rugby East play and sits atop of the standings with 26 total points. Life and Army trails the Midshipmen with 25 points.
· Navy is the only team in league play to allow under 100 total points (89) and has the largest point differential (+139).
· Junior Roanin Krieger led the team in scoring in last week's victory with 20 points from seven conversion kicks and two penalty kicks. He leads the team with 102 total points.
· With his big kicking performance against the Golden Bears, Krieger overtakes Mount St. Mary's Evan Corbett for the most points in Rugby East play with 87. The Placerville, Calif., native leads the league with 17 successful penalty kicks.
· Despite not scoring in the last two matches, sophomore Andrew Baublitz is tied second in the Rugby East with six tries. He is tied 10th in total scoring with 30 points.
· A pair of Midshipmen – Michael Kalalau and Kade Williams – reached the try zone for the first time this season in last week's victory.
· Five of Navy's eight scored tries against Kutztown came from bench players. Bengston led the way with three while Kalalau and Williams spiked down tries as well.
· Junior Aidan Bryan led the team in tackles with 10 in the victory over the Golden Bears with a perfect made tackle percentage.
· The Mids scored on 80% of its trips in Kutztown's 22-meter zone entry with eight scored tries and lost one turnover in 10 total trips.
Scouting Queens
The Royals enter the match with an 8-1 record and 5-1 in Rugby East action. Queens started out the season to a hot 7-0 start before falling to Penn State, 50-39. The Royals bounced back in their most recent outing with a thrilling, 29-26, victory over Life.
With the victory over life, Queens improved to 4-0 on its home pitch. The Royals have dominated at home averaging 38.7 points per match.
Queens leading scorer Hilton Olivier ranks fifth in overall scoring in the Rugby East. He has scored 56 points with 16 conversions and eight penalty kicks.
Navy vs. Queens
Saturday's match will be the second meeting between the two programs. In the first meeting last fall, Navy posted a dominant shutout victory, 71-0, in Annapolis.
