ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Strong doubles play sparked the Navy men's tennis team to a pair of victories Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids (12-2) posted a 6-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (3-3) and a 5-2 victory over Villanova (3-4) to run their winning streak to four matches.
Navy 6, FDU 1
The Mids quickly won the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches by the score of 6-2 on their way to sweeping the three matches and taking a 1-0 lead.
The singles portion of the match between Navy and a FDU team that defeated Lehigh on Wednesday would be a lengthy one as three lasted over two hours and five were extended into three sets.
The first match to finish was the lone straight-set decision. Navy's
Jason Kim defeated Asaf Schwartz, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, at the No. 5 flight to give Navy a 2-0 lead.
Luke Garner then posted a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Thomas Linley at No. 2 singles to make the score 3-0.
Sasha Panyan defeated Joshua Oboniye, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to secure the outcome of the match.
Navy's two remaining points were recorded by
Zach Quattro and
Steve Nguyen. Quattro defeated Jorge Alonso-Cortes, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and Nguyen posted a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Gryffin Minor at the No. 3 flight.
Navy 5, Villanova 2
Just as in the first match of the day, Navy played well in the doubles matches against Villanova. The Mids lost only a combined nine games in winning all three flights.
Navy then won four straight-set singles matches to record the victory.
J.J. Etterbeek did not lose a game in defeating Ryan Nguyen at No. 2 singles, with
Nathan Nguyen defeating Thomas Wakefield, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 flight to quickly make the score 3-0.
Nicholas Nguyen dropped just three games in defeating Lukas Choi at No. 6 singles to assure the Mids of the overall win.
Aniketh Ayinala won a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 match against Will Monahan to account for the final Navy point of the day.
Next Week
The Mids will be home Saturday for matches against Morgan State and Hofstra and then will travel to Chicago for matches the following day against Western Michigan and DePaul.
