ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams each claimed one relay event title during Wednesday's abbreviated opening session of the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.
The men's team stands first (by four points) after two events and the women's team is in second place (by nine points) after three events.
The meet began with the 200 medley relay. The Navy women's foursome of
Ela Habjan,
Riley Gavigan,
Caroline Irwin and
Maya Novack broke the meet record (1:39.90) with a winning time of 1:39.15. The Mids edged second-place Army by over one second (1:40.21).
The Loyola men's team would break the meet (1:25.30), league (1:24.90) and pool (1:24.90) records in winning the 200 medley relay. The Greyhounds recorded a time of 1:24.79 to win the race by 35-hundredths of a second over the Navy team of
Ben Irwin,
Juan Mora,
Jonah Harm and
Patrick Colwell, which posted an effort of 1:25.14. Army placed third in the race with a time of 1:25.46.
The lone diving event on the day was the women's three-meter event. Navy's
Sarah Gurley scored 267.50 points in the championship final to place seventh, one spot ahead of teammate
Mackenzie Kim with her score of 265.45 points.
Boston's divers placed first, second and sixth in the championship final.
Army had placed first in the women's 800 free relay team, but the Black Knights were later disqualified from the race. That gave the event victory to Lehigh with a time of 7:16.09 and Navy placing second.
Cameron Horner,
Erin Miller,
Gabi Baldwin and
Lauren Walsh combined for a time of 7:17.27.
** The DQ was overturned prior to the start of Thursday's morning session, giving Army the win in a time of 7:10.60. **
Navy's men's team would close the evening by placing first in the 800 free relay.
Everet Andrew,
Cohen Bruner,
Conor Cranfield and Ben Stankovich produced a time of 6:23.56 to finish just ahead of Army's second-place time of 6:24.18.
The event continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
