Griess Earns Second-Straight Trip to Nationals, Koderhandt and Cerniglia Advance to Semifinals During Day One of EIWA Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Navy wrestlers No. 13 Josh Koderhandt (141) and No. 16 Andrew Cerniglia (165) will have an opportunity to win their first Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) title after advancing to the semifinals during the first day of the 120th EIWA Championship at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pa. Both wrestlers won their first two matches in the nation's oldest collegiate wrestling tournament to remain in the championship bracket.

Eighteenth-ranked Grady Griess posted a 2-1 record during the opening day of the tournament, which earned him an automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Championship. The EIWA was given eight pre-allocated spots at heavyweight and Griess can't place lower than eighth in his bracket.

Additionally, No. 28 Danny Wask (174) and David Key (184) will be in action tomorrow in the consolation bracket in their respective weight class.

As a team, the Mids stand in eighth place of 17 teams with 44.5 points.

Koderhandt, who earned the No. 1 pressed at 141 pounds for the tournament, needed just 2:13 to defeat his first opponent. The junior pinned Sacred Heart's Vincent Milazzo at the 2:13 mark to earn his seventh win by fall this season.

Koderhandt used a big second period to beat Pat Phillips of Franklin & Marshall in the quarterfinals. After scoring an escape, he recorded a takedown with 19 seconds remaining on the clock to take a 4-0 lead. The Belleville, Ill., native also received the riding time point to claim the match by a 5-0 decision.

Koderhandt will face Penn's No. 18 CJ Composto in the semifinals. A victory against Composto would send Koderhandt to the finals and earn him an automatic qualifying bid for the NCAA Championship. He can also garner an automatic qualifying spot by placing third or fourth.

Cerniglia also made quick work of his first opponent, beating Keegan Rothrock of Brown by fall just 2:30 into the match.

The senior advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 13-0 major decision over Drexel's No. 28 Cody Walsh. Cerniglia scored a takedown just 12 seconds into the match to gain an early, 3-0, lead. He quickly scored four points in the second period from a reversal and a two-point near fall. Walsh was also called for stalling for the second time in the match, which awarded Cerniglia a free point to go ahead, 8-0. Cerniglia added another five points to his score in the third from an escape, a takedown and the riding time point. With the win, The Nazareth, Pa., native improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents this season.

Cerniglia will go up against Binghamton's No. 17 Brevin Cassella in the semifinals. He defeated Cassella in Navy's dual against Binghamton earlier in the season by a 5-3 decision. Cerniglia can place as low as fifth to earn a trip to nationals.

Griess won his first match of the day by a 15-1 major decision against Santino Morina of Drexel.

Navy's team captain then went into overtime in his quarterfinal match against Army's No. 27 Lucas Stoddard. Stoddard won the match in TB2 for accumulating more riding time.

Penn's John Stout held an early edge over Griess by scoring a takedown with 25 seconds to go in the first period. Griess quickly countered with a reversal to make the score, 3-2. Stout recorded an escape early in the second period and then scored a takedown with 19 seconds remaining on the clock. Griess scored a huge escape with only seven seconds to go in the period to make the score, 7-3. Following an escape five seconds into the third period, Griess tied the match with 1:18 remaining by scoring a takedown. Griess ended the match at the 6:23 mark by pinning Stout to win by fall. He matched his career high for the most wins by fall in a season (eight) with the victory.

Griess' consolation quarterfinal match will be against No. 17 Cory Day of Binghamton. Day has defeated Griess in both matchups between the two this season.

Wask posted a pair of takedowns in the first period to take a 6-1 lead against Brown's Jonathan Conrad. The freshman added seven points to the scoreboard with two more takedowns and an escape in the second period to gain a 13-2 advantage. Wask concluded the match with over two minutes of riding time to earn an additional point and win by a 14-3 major decision.

Army's No. 14 Ben Pasiuk defeated Wask in the quarterfinals by scoring a takedown in sudden victory to win by a 4-1 decision.

Wask rebounded with an impressive victory in the consolation bracket against Connor Herceg of Lehigh. Wask struck first in the match with a takedown in the opening period to take a 3-0 lead. Wask gained a four-point cushion with an escape in the second. Herceg responded by scoring a huge takedown with only a second remaining in the period to make the score, 4-3. Wask regained the momentum with a takedown in the third period and only surrendered an escape in the final 1:36 to win by a 7-4 decision.

Wask will battle Harvard's No. 5 Phil Conigliaro on Saturday. The Wantage, N.J., native must place at least sixth to receive an automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Championship.

Key was behind, 3-2, entering the third period in the first round against Lehigh's Jack Wilt. The senior flipped the match in his favor by scoring a takedown with only 42 seconds left on the clock. He would take the match by a 5-4 decision.

Key nearly pulled off a huge upset in the quarterfinals against No. 7 Chris Foca of Cornell. Foca scored two early takedowns to take a 6-2 lead. Key answered with a takedown before the end of the opening period to cut his deficit to just one point. The score remained, 6-5, until Foca recorded a takedown with just 14 seconds to go in the match. Although Key quickly scored an escape, Foca held strong to win by a 10-6 decision.

Key posted a dominant victory by technical fall (19-3 / 6:26) over Harvard's Leo Tarantino in the consolation bracket. The Norcross, Ga., native scored six takedowns, three of which came in the final period.

A seventh-place finish in the tournament would send Key to the NCAA Championship for the third time in his career. He will take on Penn's No. 21 Max Hale in his first match on Saturday.

Session three of the EIWA Championship, which includes the semifinals, consolation quarterfinals, consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches, will begin on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Session four will start at approximately 4:45 p.m. and feature the championship and third and fifth-place matches.
