RALEIGH, N.C. // The Navy men's golf team closed out the regular season playing in the Stitch Intercollegiate at the par-71 Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C. over the weekend where the Mids shot a three-round 957 (323-315-319) to place 11th. Golfers faced inclement weather throughout the weekend and forced multiple delays in the final round.
Jack Tarzy (So / Medford, N.J.) led the way for the Mids with his 19-over par 232 (80-76-76) to tie for 50th.
Derek Weaver (So / Hackettstown, Va.) finished 68th with a 26-over par 239 (79-77-83), while
Chip Deegan (So / Newport Beach, Calif.) was a 2 strokes behind in 69th with a 241 (81-77-83). Team captain
Benjamin Valdez (Jr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) and
Luke Lombardo (Fr / Severna Park, Md.) closed out the tournament in 77th with a 36-over par 249.
Noah Nuez (Jr / Laveen, Ariz.), meanwhile, competed as an individual in the tournament and placed 63rd with a 23-over par 236 (80-79-77).
Tournament Notes
• The 12-team tournament featured 6 teams ranked among the nation's top 100.
• Ranked 82nd nationally, NC State won the team title by 5 strokes over UNC Greensboro. The Wolfpack were in second after the opening round (295), but came back to the two lowest rounds of the tournament (286-289) to win the crown with an 18-over par 870.
• UNC Greensboro, ranked 45th, took second with a 23-over par 875 (293-290-292), while #24 Duke (301-289-296=886), #83 Georgia Southern (296-291-300=887) and #40 VCU (303-292-293=888) rounded out the top 5.
• NC State's Nick Mathews paced to the field with his 2-over par 215 (73-70-72) to earn medalist honors over Duke's Luke Sample (72-72-72=216) and teammate Carter Graf (71-72-74=217), who claimed medalist honors a year ago.
The Mids will use the next two weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Championship which is slated to be played April 26-28 at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
