ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Having a Midshipmen win individual medalist honors for the second-straight season at its home spring tournament and putting three players in the top-10 finishers, the Navy women's golf team took third place at the 2024 Navy Spring Invitational after wrapping up play Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
Playing 36 holes over two days at the par-72, 6,084-yard course, the Mids shot a 318 in Saturday's first round before improving to a team round of 310 on Sunday to wrap up the weekend at 52-over 628 and finish third behind tournament winner Penn (36-over par 612) and runner-up Quinnipiac (44-over par 620)
Competing as an individual, sophomore
Sue Lee notched an opening round of 77 before shooting a tournament-low round of 70 on the final 18 holes, registering a weekend score of 3-over par 147 to take first place on the leaderboard.
The top golfer in Navy's lineup was another sophomore, as
Hallie Brisco posted rounds of 75 and 79 to close the event in a tie for sixth place at 10-over par 154, while senior
Mara Hirtle also recorded a top-10 finish by shooting 12-over par 156 (81-75) to tie for 10th overall.
Tying for 19th place was freshman
Keira Howard, who shot rounds of 79 and 80 for a weekend total of 15-over par 159, while fellow rookie
Emma Tang was one stroke behind at 16-over par 160 (83-77) to finish in a tie for 23rd. Rounding out the lineup was senior
Stephanie Lee, tying for 30th at 19-over par 163 (84-79).
Competing as an individual as well, junior
Bridget Hoang tied
Stephanie Lee for 30th place at 19-over par 163 (88-75), while freshman
Una Johnson placed 55th at 33-over par 177 (92-85) as Navy's third individual competitor.
"We are extremely proud of Sue's individual win," said head coach
Kylee Sullivan. "She was put in a lot of hard work, and it paid off this weekend with two great rounds in tough conditions. The team as a whole has a ton of momentum going into the league championship at Bucknell this coming week."
Sue Lee's first-place finish marks the second-straight Navy Spring Invitational and the third-straight home event won by a Mid, as
Stephanie Lee claimed medalist honors at the 2023 Navy Spring Invitational and Hirtle won the 2023 Navy Fall Invitational.
Up next for Navy is the 2024 Patriot League Championship on April 19-21, held at the Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa.
