ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team ran its winning streak to four matches with a pair of wins on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids (4-2) registered a 6-1 victory over George Mason (0-1) and a 4-3 win over Mount St. Mary's (2-1).
Navy began the day by sweeping three close doubles matches against George Mason.
Jason Kim and
Charlie Spencer combined for a 6-3 victory over Jacco Arends and Zavan Fahim at No. 2 doubles in the first match to finish. Clinching the point was the No. 1 tandem of
Luke Garner and
Jake Young with a 6-3 victory against Monil Lotlikar and Niza Simunyola. Completing the sweep was the No. 3 pairing of
Aaron Gu and
Nathan Nguyen, which defeated Ekansh Kumar and Shai Saeed by the score of 6-4.
Garner placed Navy's second point on the board when he defeated Arends, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. It became a 3-0 lead when
George Cutone posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Saeed at the No. 6 flight. After a victory by George Mason at No. 1 singles,
Aniketh Ayinala secured the overall match when he tallied a 6-1, 7-5 win over Simunyola at No. 4 singles.
The remaining two matches saw
Herrick Legaspi and
Tommy Kim rally to win three-set matches. Legaspi defeated Lotlikar, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7), at No. 2 singles and Kim won a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) decision over Fahim at the No. 5 flight.
The doubles point between the Mids and The Mount was not awarded until the a tiebreaker was played in third and final match between the teams. Mount St. Mary's would win the match to take a 1-0 lead.
Navy answered by winning the first three singles matches to finish and gain a 3-1 advantage. Legaspi posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Akarsh Gaonkar at No. 2 singles,
Zach Quattro defeated Alessio Guarino, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 5 flight and Nguyen recorded a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Filippos Zachiotis at No. 1 singles.
The Mount responded with a pair of three-set wins to tie the match at 3-3. That left the No. 3 match between Spencer and Alexi Roy to decide the outcome. Roy won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-5, then Spencer evened the match with a 6-4 win in set two. Spencer would post a 6-2 victory in the third set to give the Mids the 4-3 victory.
Navy will return to the Tose Family Tennis Center on Feb. 1 when it plays host to Long Island and Saint Joseph's.
