ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy sophomore punter
Jacob Carlson has been added to the Ray Guy Award Watch List as a nod to his performance through the first six games of the year.
Carlson is averaging 44.6 yards per punt for the 6-0 Midshipmen with a long of 62. Five of his 15 punts have gone for 50 yards or more, while he has placed seven punts inside the 20. He has just two touchbacks in his first 15 punts.
The 44.6-yard average would be the fourth-best in school history if he can maintain it. The school record is 45.7 set by
Riley Riethman last year.
Carlson averaged 56.2 yards per punt on four punts with a career-long of 62 yards in Saturday's thrilling 32-31 comeback victory over Temple.
The Ray Guy Award - named for football's premier punter - honors the nation's best collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner are net punting average, percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line, and percentage of punts not returned, with particular emphasis placed on net punting average.
The Midshipmen are off this week before playing host to FAU (3-3, 2-1 in the American) on Homecoming next Saturday, Oct. 25 in a 3:30 PM contest. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online here:
