ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After racing in a pair of exhibitions against open-weight Temple and Washington College clubs earlier this fall, the Navy lightweight rowing team will get the chance to test itself against five fellow lightweight programs this Sunday with action at the 2025 Princeton Chase. Contested over a three-mile stretch of Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey, the Mids will have the majority of its roster competing with nine entries over three different classifications. The first event involving Navy is the men's lightweight eight contest at 9:30 a.m. All of the racing on Sunday will be in a head format of single-file time trials.
That initial race on Sunday will see the Navy lightweight with five of the 20 entries in the field for men's lightweight eights. The always deep and talented Midshipmen fleet has five crews entered to go up against Princeton (4), Penn (4), Cornell (3), Georgetown (3) and Mercyhurst (1). After completing that first three-mile race, two Navy lightweight crews will turnaround at 12 p.m. for action in the men's open-weight 'round two' event; the Midshipmen in that boat have yet to be determined. 13 crews will be racing in the open-weight 'round two' contest. The final race of the day will see Navy break into smaller boats as part of the men's open fours at 12:35 p.m. The Mids will have two entrees in the expected field of 33.
Last year at the 2024 Princeton Chase, the Mids had crews entered in three events and came away with three top-10 results, led by a fifth-place finish in the men's lightweight eights contest. Navy's first varsity eight posted a time of 12:53.299 that placed them fifth overall in the lightweight eights. The Mids in the LWT 4+ A crew nearly mirrored that outcome with a sixth-place outcome in the open-weight fours event.
