ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Student-athletes
Jacori Sutton of sprint football,
Roanin Krieger of men's rugby, and
Zanai Barnett-Gay of women's basketball were chosen as this week's Naval Academy Athletic Association Athletes of the Week. Sutton and Krieger helped their respective sports to Star victories over Army, while Barnett-Gay led the women's basketball team to its first SEC win since 1998.
Jacori Sutton, Sprint Football
Sutton, who was also named Collegiate Sprint Football League Special Teams Player of the Week, was recognized for his efforts in the Mids' 20-17 overtime victory over Army over the weekend.
Sutton connected on the biggest field goal of his two-year career with a 36-yard kick in overtime to give Navy the Star, the CSFL Championship, and an undefeated season. The 36-yard field goal was a season long for Sutton. The sophomore kicker finished the game with a season-high two field goals. He converted a 21-yard attempt to put Navy in front 17-7 early in the fourth quarter before kicking the game-winner in overtime. Additionally, Sutton added four kickoffs for 195 total yards (48.8) to help Navy with the field position battle.
Roanin Krieger, Men's Rugby
Krieger led the team with nine points as he converted all three kicks after tries in Navy's 21-16 comeback victory over Army. Rugby's Star win, along with sprint football's victory against the Black Knights earlier in the day, evened the overall Army-Navy Star Series, which is presented by USAA, at 4-4-1. With his performance, Krieger secured the Rugby East scoring title for the third-straight season with 71 points and helped the Mids claim their fourth-consecutive conference championship.
Zanai Barnett-Gay, Women's Basketball
Coming off award-winning freshman and sophomore campaigns, Barnett-Gay has continued the fast start to her junior season as she averaged a double-double in wins over Longwood on Wednesday and the University of Florida on Sunday. The Glenn Dale, Maryland native began her week with 25 points and 13 rebounds to go along with six assists on Wednesday before coming back on Sunday and helping Navy clinch its first win over an SEC team since 1998. Navigating the second half with three fouls Barnett-Gay scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the second half against the Gators. She added eight boards, two assists and two steals in action against Florida. For the week, junior averaged 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals, while shooting 50.0% (14-28) from the field and 50.0% (6-12) from beyond the arc. This is the third award of the week for her as she has previously been named the Patriot League Player of the Week and USBWA National Player of the Week.
