BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams combined for four weekly awards from the Patriot League this week following a sweep by the Mids over Army in the annual Star Meet. The league announced Tuesday that
Ben Irwin was named the men's swimmer of the week,
Mackenzie Kim and
Anthony Sciulli were selected as the divers of the week and
Xavier Sohovich was tabbed as the men's rookie of the week.
Additionally, Kim and Irwin were named the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athletes of the Week.
The Navy men's team posted a 206-94 victory and the women's team rallied for a 152-148 win.
Irwin recorded a pair of wins and two second-place finishes to earn his first swimmer-of-the-week award of this campaign and the fourth of his career. He swam the opening leg of Navy's 200 medley relay team that placed second in a Navy-record tying time of 1:23.80. That effort also broke the pool and meet records. He then broke a Navy record by completing the 100 back in a second-place clocking of 45.81. Irwin won his first event, the 200 back, by 2.18 seconds in a meet-record time of 1:39.92. He closed his day by winning the 100 fly by one-quarter of a second with his time of 46.93.
Kim placed first on each diving board to earn her fourth weekly award of the season (Oct. 21, Nov, 11, Nov. 25) and the 14th in her career. She first scored 274.95 points to lead a 1-2-3 Navy for the Mids in the three-meter diving event. Kim won the board by 16 points over teammate
Lily Barrett. She went on to score 279.30 points to win the one-meter board by 17 points as Navy went 1-3-4 in the event.
Sciulli previously was named the league's diver of the week on Oct. 21 of this season and has now totaled three weekly nods in his career after he tallied a gold and a bronze medal against the Black Knights. Sciulli scored 302.40 points to win the one-meter board by 12 points and also better the NCAA Zone Diving Championship qualifying standard of 300 points. Sciulli additionally placed third in a 1-2-3 Navy finish on the three meter with his tally of 295.65 points.
Sohovich placed first and second in his two individual events against Army to join
Chase Maier (Oct. 14, Nov. 4) as Mids to earn the rookie-of-the-week award this year. Sohovich led a 1-2-3 Navy finish in the 200 free with his winning time of 1:33.77 to win the race by seven-tenths of a second and break the Navy, meet and Patriot League records. Sohovich also placed second in another 1-2-3 Navy finish in the 500 free with his time of 4:21.70.
