ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The eight-match winning streak by the Navy men's tennis team came to an end with a pair of losses Friday. The Mids (8-4) lost a 4-3 decision to Florida Gulf Coast (3-5) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., and a 4-3 nearly four-hour match to Hofstra (2-2) at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
Navy started its trip to the Sunshine State by winning the doubles point against Florida Gulf Coast.
Aniketh Ayinala and
J.J. Etterbeek combined for a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles against Stavros Hadjivarnava and Harry Michalowski. The Mids scored the point when
Luke Garner and
Jake Young defeated Hugo Magnusson and C.J. Smith, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.
The Eagles won straight-set singles matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to take a 2-1 lead.
Herrick Legaspi posted a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win over Pablo Paternostro at the No. 4 flight to tie the match at 2-2. The teams split a pair of three-set matches, with Etterbeek defeating Smith, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, to knot the match at 3-3. FGCU's Ninad Raut posted a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ayinala at No. 5 singles to close out the match.
Back in Annapolis, the Mids won the doubles point against the Pride.
George Cutone and
Charlie Spencer tallied a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Kaita Odani and Vincent Turina. Hofstra followed with a victory at No. 1 doubles, then Navy's No. 3 team of
Aaron Gu and
Tommy Kim outlasted Joshua Reynolds and Enaut Garcia in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6), to give the point to the Mids in a match lasting almost one hour.
Hofstra posted wins at No. 6 and then No. 1 singles to take a 2-1 lead. Cutone followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles to tie the match at 2-2. The Pride regained the lead when they won at No. 5 singles, then used a two-hour and forty-minute three-set win at No. 2 singles to secure the victory. Spencer won a lengthy (2:40) 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 match at No. 4 singles over Noa Forste-Dinell to account for the final score of 4-3.
Navy will play host to Hampton Friday at 9 a.m. in Annapolis and play Air Force Saturday at 5 p.m. in Orlando.
