ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 17/15 Navy women's lacrosse team (2-0) takes on No. 20/19 Richmond (2-0) on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va. The game was moved up a day to try to avoid expected inclement weather in the Richmond area.

All-Time Series
The Midshipmen and Spiders meet for the fourth time in school history on Tuesday. The Mids hold a 3-0 advantage in the series and Navy is 24-3 (.889) all-time against current members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
A late 5-0 run helped the 19th-ranked Navy women's lacrosse team defeat visiting Richmond, 12-8, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in the first meeting between the two teams in 2013. Attacker Loren Generi ('15) scored seven points and goalie Annie Foky ('15) made 11 saves in the victory.
In 2023, Navy posted a 20-9 win over No. 18 Richmond at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va. The 11-point win tied for the largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in program history, while the 20 goals scored were the most scored against a ranked foe in school history.
Last season, the 17th-ranked Mids posted a 14-5 victory over the 20th-ranked Spiders at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Midshipmen used a combination of stout defense and a balanced offense to come away with the nine-goal win. Six different Midshipmen found the back of the net in the game with four notching multiple goals. Additionally, Navy caused 12 of Richmond's 24 turnovers on the day.
Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 17-16 road win against Villanova on Saturday. Eight different Mids scored in the game with five notching multiple scores.
Tori DiCarlo led the way with five goals, recording her 100th career goal on the day.
As a team, the Midshipmen have tallied 33 goals with 16 assists, while picking up 39 ground balls, winning 25 draw controls, and causing 21 turnovers.
Entering the week,
Emily Messinese and
Mikayla Williams lead the team with 10 and eight points, respectively. Messinese boasts a team-best seven goals, while adding three assists. Williams has scored three goals with a team-high five assists.
DiCarlo and
Alyssa Chung are one point back of Williams with seven points. DiCarlo has six goals and a helper, while Chung has recorded five goals and a pair of assists.
Emma Kennedy rounds out the top five with five points on four goals and an assist.
Ava Yovino and
Taylor Miles have scored three goals apiece with Yovino adding an assist for four points.
Lola Leone follows with three points on a pair of goals and a helper.
Maggie DeFabio and
Anna Gotterup have one assist each for one point apiece.
Defensively, Navy has caused 21 of its opponents 35 turnovers, including nine unsuccessful clear attempts.
Felicia Giglio and Messinese have caused four turnovers apiece, while
Caroline Gage,
Jaclyn Johns, and DeFabio have two takeaways each. DeFabio leads the team with five ground balls, while DiCarlo, Messinese, Williams, and Yovino follow with four individually.
Giglio leads the team with 10 saves in roughly 114 minutes of action, while adding four caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.
Emma Richardell, who saw her first action of the season between the posts at Villanova, has registered a save in six minutes of action.
Alyssa Daley leads all players with 11 draw victories. Messinese has chipped in five while Williams and Yovino have added four and two, correspondingly. Johns, Miles, and
Maura Murphy have also been credited with a draw victory.
Scouting the Opposition
The Spiders enter the week with a 2-0 record on the season. Richmond opened the season at Penn State, defeating the No. 20 Nittany Lions, 12-10. The Spiders followed that performance with a victory over Queens (W, 15-8) on Saturday.
Colleen Queen leads the team with 12 points on seven goals and five assists. Alexis Morton follows with nine points on five goals and four helpers with Juliana Stanley also adding five goals.
Meaghan Trainer has five of the Spiders' 22 caused turnovers. Caroline Murphy and Caroline Stevens lead Richmond with six ground balls apiece. Clare Mcooe paces the team with six draw controls with Murphy and Victoria Rankin following with five and four.
Abby Francioli has played and started both games for Richmond at goal. She has logged 105 minutes allowing 13 goals, while registering 19 saves for a 59.4 save percentage.
National Rankings
The Navy women's lacrosse team is currently ranked in all three national polls. The Midshipmen are No. 17 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll rankings this week, while coming in at No. 15 in the Inside Lacrosse Media poll. Additionally, the Mids are ranked No. 15 according to USA Lacrosse.
Richmond also enters the week ranked in all three polls. The Spiders come in at No. 19 in the Inside Lacrosse poll, while ranking No. 20 according to the IWLCA and USA Lacrosse.
In its history, Navy has been ranked 95 total weeks, including a stretch of 46 weeks from the final poll of 2017 (May 30) to April 5, 2021. The Mids' first appearance in the national rankings came on March 11, 2013, coming in at No. 20. The Midshipmen's highest ranking – sixth – came in the final polls of the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Last season, the Midshipmen were in the top 25 poll for seven weeks, rising as high as No. 17 and finishing the season 20th.
