LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Navy women's swimming and diving team claimed two gold medals and the school's men's team earned one silver and one bronze medal during the opening session of the Patriot League Championship Wednesday night at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa.
Navy totaled 218 points on the night to lead the women's standings by 34 points over Army. The Mids are in third place in the men's tabulation with 110 points. Army is in first place with 120 points and Loyola is in second with 116 points.
The meet began with a pair of close races in the 200 medley relay. The women's race saw the top three teams finish within 1.1 seconds of each other. The Navy foursome of
Ela Habjan,
Lauren Walsh,
Caroline Irwin and
Catherine Weaverling held off Loyola for the victory by one-hundredth of a second. The Mids accrued a time of 1:39.17 and the Greyhounds posted a mark of 1:39.18. Following in third place was Army with a time of 1:40.27.
The men's race also was close as the difference between the first and third-place finishing teams was eight-tenths of a second. Loyola won the race with a time of 1:23.74, Army finished in second with an effort of 1:24.19 and Navy's team of
Ben Irwin,
Juan Mora,
Lachlan Andrew and
Simon Thompson placed third in a time of 1:24.56.
The lone diving event of the day was the women's three-meter board. Navy's
Mackenzie Kim scored 323.90 points to win the event by 15.6 points over Army's Minh Donnell.
Joining Kim in advancing to the championship final were teammates Izzy Olson, who placed fifth (264.25), and
Lily Barrett, who finished in eighth place (244.00).
The 800 free relay events closed the abbreviated session. Army would win the women's event in a time of 7:15.17, with Navy's team of
Samantha Clifford,
Allie Maloney,
Erin Miller and
Tiffany Shields recording a second-place time of 7:17.64. Bucknell finished in third place with a time of 7:17.89.
Army also claimed the gold medal in the men's distance relay. The Black Knights posted a time of 6:18.62 to finish ahead of the Navy second-place effort of 6:23.22. Comprising the Navy team were
Everet Andrew,
Dean Jones,
Kellan Pattison and Ben Stankovich.
The championship runs Thursday through Saturday.
