94th Meeting Between Navy and #11 Johns Hopkins Set for Saturday Night in Annapolis

Setting the Stage
• Inside the Game:
Navy (4-2, 1-1 Patriot League) will step out of conference action and play host to longtime rival #11 Johns Hopkins (5-2, 0-0 Big Ten) on Saturday evening. Faceoff is set for 7:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game is presented by Navy Mutual. Navy is led by Joe Amplo, who has put together a 39-28 record in his 6 seasons at the helm of the Mids' program, while Johns Hopkins' Peter Milliman has posted a 39-51 record in 5 seasons as the Blue Jays' head coach. Saturday's contest marks the 94th meeting in a series that dates back to 1908, Navy's first year as a varsity program.

 - Navy has lost just 6 games in the Joe Amplo era (2020-present) when scoring 10 or more goals (33-6, 84.6).
9 - Navy head coach Joe Amplo (91-81) is 9 wins shy of reaching the 100-win milestone for his career.
8 - Navy has won at least a share of the Patriot League regular-season title 8 times (2004-05-06-07-08-15-16-18) since joining the league in 2004.
7 - Navy and Johns Hopkins are among just 7 teams who have won 800 games. Johns Hopkins (1,032) is the only school to reach 1,000 wins, while Navy is the fifth-winningest team (843).

2 - Two of the most historic programs in the sport's history, Navy and Johns Hopkins will meet for the 94th time in series history. It's tied as the second-longest series (games played) in Navy history (104 vs. Army / 94 vs. Maryland).
1 - Henry Tolker (Sr / A) needs just 1 goal to move into the top 10 of Navy's all-time goals scored list. His 86 goals are the most by a Navy player since Ian Dingman amassed 125 goals, the second most in program history, from 2003-07.

Navy-Johns Hopkins Series
• Saturday night's contest marks the 94th meeting between Navy and Johns Hopkins and the 56th in Annapolis.
• The Blue Jays have dominated the series, holding a 63-29-1 advantage. They owned an amazing 36-game winning streak over the Mids that began in 1975 and was snapped in 2010, when Navy earned a 9-8 overtime win in Annapolis.  
• Johns Hopkins leads the series in games played in Annapolis, 35-19-1. The Blue Jays have won 3 in a row at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with Navy's last win in Annapolis coming by way of an 8-2 victory on April 21, 2012. 
• 3 of Navy's last 5 wins in the series have come in Annapolis - 8-2 on 4.21.12 // 9-8 OT on 4.24.10 // 13-12 on 5.4.74. 
• Last year's win marked just the 4th victory by the Mids in the series overall since 1975 (9-8 OT in 2010 / 8-2 in 2012 / 11-10 in 2022 / 10-9 OT in 2024). 
• Eleven of the last 22 games between Navy and Johns Hopkins have been decided by 1 goal, including last year's contest in which Max Hewitt netted the game-winner in overtime. Additionally, 6 of those 11 one-goal games have gone into extra minutes.
• 2024 grad Max Hewitt scored the game-winner for the Mids in 2022 at Homewood Field and once again hit the game-winner in last year's contest in Baltimore.

Scouting Johns Hopkins
• Fifth-year head coach Peter Milliman has led Johns Hopkins to a 5-2 mark this season, playing 4 teams currently ranked among the USILA's top 20. The Blue Jays opened the season winning 4 in a row  against Denver (13-10), Towson (11-10), Georgetown (11-6) and Loyola (9-8) before dropping a 13-12 decision to North Carolina. Johns Hopkins bounced back with a 13-12 win over Virginia before falling to Syracuse on the road last Sunday 13-10. 
• Four of the Blue Jay's 7 games have been decided by 1 goal (3-1), while 6 of the 7 were by 3 or fewer goals (4-2).
• Five different players have produced double digits in the scoring column this season, including Russell Melendez (Sr / A) who leads the team with 22 points on a team-best 14 goals and 8 assists. He stands 46th in points per game (3.67), 48th in goals per game (2.33) and 62nd in assists per game (1.33). He is also 7th nationally in shooting percentage (53.8)
• Meanwhile, Matt Collison  (Jr / M) owns 20 points on 12 goals and 8 assists. Brooks English (Jr / M) has 17 points on 4 goals and a team-high 13 assists.
• After 4 years at Loyola, Luke Staudt has taken over the netminder duties for the Blue Jays as a grad transfer. He owns a 10.29 goals-against average and a 45.0 save percentage in his 7 appearances. Staudt has recorded double-digit saves in 4 of the 7 games this season and allowed double-figure goals in 5 contests. 
• Scott V. Smith (Gr / D) leads the team with 8 caused turnovers this year and 63 for his career.
• Logan Callahan (Sr) handles the faceoff duties for the Blue Jays, winning 89 of the 154 draws (57.8) he has taken this spring. He also leads the way for the team with 46 ground balls. He is ranked 21st in faceoff winning percentage and 14th in goals per game (6.43).

Navy vs. the Big Ten
• Outside of the Patriot League, Navy has faced teams that currently make up the Big Ten more than any other conference. The Mids own a 124-136-2 (47.7) record against the Big Ten which is comprised of Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers.
• The only team Navy has not faced in the Big Ten is Michigan, a program that was elevated to varsity status in 2012.
• Navy has faced Maryland the most, meeting 94 times with the Terps leading the series 60-33-1. Meanwhile, Saturday night's contests also marks the 94th meeting between Navy and Johns Hopkins with the Blue Jays leading 63-29-1.
• Navy dropped a 13-7 decision to then-10th-ranked Penn State on Feb. 22 in what was Navy's 1st game in University Park since since 2003 when they were both members of the ECAC Lacrosse League.

Historic Programs
• One of the oldest programs in the sport, Navy is in its 118th year of having a varsity men's lacrosse team. It is the 5th-oldest program in Div. I men's lacrosse. 
• Four of Navy's opponents this spring are among the sport's top 10 oldest, including this Friday's foe Lehigh who is in its 136th season and is the 2nd-oldest program.  
• Johns Hopkins, who visits Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium next Saturday (March 15) to play the Mids, is in its 138th season and is the oldest program. Additionally, Johns Hopkins is the only team to reach 1,000 wins (1,032).
• Army and Navy will meet in Annapolis on April 12 in what will be the 105th game in the series. It's the most games Navy has played against another opponent and the sport's 7th-longest rivalry. 

The Sport's Most Historic Rivalries
• With one of the most storied programs in the sport of lacrosse, Navy has traditionally played 3 rivalry games that stand among the nation's longest.
• Army and Navy have met 104 times, marking the 7th-longest rivalry in college lacrosse. 
• Also appearing on the list of longest rivalries are the Navy vs. Maryland and Navy vs. Johns Hopkins series. The Mids have played Maryland 94 times, which is the 14th-longest rivalry. The two programs, however, have not met since 2019.
• The Navy-Johns Hopkins series runs 93 games, which is 15th on the list. After a two-year hiatus due to scheduling and another two due to the pandemic, the Mids and Blue Jays rekindled their rivalry in March of 2022 in Baltimore. Navy scored an historic victory (11-10), defeating Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field for the first time since 1969. The Mids earned a 10-9 overtime win against the Blue Jays on their home field last spring, marking the first time Navy has defeated Hopkins in Baltimore in back-to-back games since 1963 (10-5) and 1965 (15-6). 
• Cornell vs. Hobart is the longest-running series in college lacrosse with the two teams meeting 142 times. The Big Red defeated the Statesmen 22-9 on Feb. 25.
• There are 3 rivalry games slated for this weekend. In addition to Navy vs. Johns Hopkins (94th gm), Maryland and Virginia will meet on Saturday for the 99th time, while Dartmouth and Harvard play Sunday in what will be the 94th meeting.

First Time Foes
• One of the oldest programs in the sport's history, Navy is in its 118th season and has played 52 of the other 76 Div.I programs. 
• Navy checked off Iona from its list of teams it had never played when the Mids defeated the first-year program 22-9 on Feb. 8. It will check off another team from the list when it faces Le Moyne next Monday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. 
• The other 23 teams Navy has not played are UAlbany, Bellarmine, Binghamton, Bryant, Cleveland State, Denver, Hampton, LIU, Marquette, UMass-Lowell, Mercyhurst, Merrimack, Michigan, Monmouth, NJIT, Notre Dame, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Siena, St. Bonaventure, St. John's, Utah and Wagner.
