ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On a warm but windy Saturday in Annapolis, the Navy women's golf team battled but ultimately succumbed to Delaware, 4-3, in match play at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
Playing a modified match-play event with seven singles matches on the par-72, 6,084-yard course, the Midshipmen found themselves even with the Blue Hens when sophomore
Una Johnson and UD's Julia Paveit played all-square, splitting the opening point.
Navy's freshmen then split their group, as
Vivian Cressman had a 3 & 2 win over Anushka Sawant but
Megan Kirkpatrick dropped her match with Alisa Khokhlova, 3 & 1.
Continuing on, junior
Sue Lee was victorious against Hyunji Kim, 1-up, while sophomore
Emma Tang finished all-square with Mary Grace Dunigan to put the score at 3-2 Navy.
The Blue Hens rallied in the final grouping, as Marissa Malosh defeated senior captain
Bridget Hoang, 4 & 3, while Lilia Henkel edged out sophomore
Keira Howard, 2 & 1, in the final singles match of the day to seal Delaware's victory.
"It was a close match with Delaware throughout today," said head coach Kylee Sullivan. "We are proud of how the team battled through each match, taking them all to the final stretch. Each player had a great day, and great shots were made in pressure situations. We are looking to build on this round as we lead into our next tournament."
Navy is now 7-5 in match-play events, going 1-3 in singles-only matches.
The Mids will return to action on April 6-7, playing in the Terrapin Invitational at the University of Maryland Golf Course.
