ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had another busy weekend with three different regattas, including the first conference championship of the spring season, posting top-four finishes in all three events.
Â
Hosting the MAISA Women's Fleet Race Championship in Annapolis, the regatta featured 15 teams and two beautiful days of racing on the Severn River. The Midshipmen got off to a good start and were among the early leaders before a few setbacks in the afternoon dropped the team out of the top-five temporarily. However, the Mids performed well on Sunday and shined when the wind picked up at the end, winning the last race in each division to secure third overall.
Evie Blauvelt,
Maggie Schuler and
Sarah McNelly claimed the "A" division victory while
Ava Farley,
Eva Ottenbreit and
Josie Sherry took seventh in the "B" division.
Â
Navy also claimed its sixth co-ed team-racing victory of the season this weekend at the seven-team Hampton Team Race in Hampton, Va., with the regatta sailed in warm weather and great wind. The Mids dropped a race to Old Dominion early on but remained perfect after that, winning comfortably with a 14-1 overall record. Navy's skippers were
Robert Ziman,
Teddy Martin,
Umi Noritake and
Sean Trudell with crews consisting of
Margo Cicero,
Melania Gonzalez and
Molly Jethwa.
Â
Navy also competed in the eight-team gray division of MIT's Marchiando Team Race in Boston, Mass. The event was extremely challenging due to a strong lineup of teams and the shifty Charles River winds. In the end, Navy finished fourth overall with a 10-11 record. Navy's skippers were
Tanner Kelly,
Nathan Smith,
Jack Welburn and
Henry Allgeier with crews of
Ellie Alex,
Darby Graham and
Fiona Cullen.
Â
Navy returns to the water on April 5-6 for the Prosser Trophy, MAISA's Team Race Championship, as well as the Yale Women's Team Race.
