ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A pair of school records and a new league record earned
Ben Irwin this week's Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete-of-the-Week award, presented by Northrop Grumman.
Irwin competed at last week's NCAA Men's Swimming Championship in both backstroke events. He first posted a time of 45.66 in the 100 backstroke to break the school record of 45.82 set three seasons ago by Caleb Mauldin. Irwin entered the championship seeded 41st in the event with his qualifying time of 45.92, but finished in a tie for 26th place.
The sophomore then lowered his own Navy and Patriot League record of 1:40.04 in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:39.79. Irwin placed 20th in the 200 back after being seeded 26th in the event at the start of the meet.
