Laurendine Added to Volleyball Coaching Staff

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Shawna Laurendine has joined the Navy volleyball staff for the 2025 season as an assistant coach, head coach Paco Labrador announced today.  She arrives at Navy after having served as a head coach on the collegiate level for 21 seasons and on the high school level for an additional four years.

"I'm thrilled to add Shawna to our staff," said Labrador.  "She adds a tremendous level of coaching experience to our gym.  She will have an immediate positive impact on our training environment in all areas, but specifically she has a keen eye for blocking."

Her first head coaching position was at West Alabama (Livingston, Ala.) for four seasons starting in 1996.  She led the NCAA Division II team to a 32-14 record in her inaugural season and to a 78-81 record overall.

Laurendine then began a five-year stint as the head coach at Southern Arkansas (Magnolia, Ark.).  Her teams, which also competed on the Division II level, compiled a 67-77-6 record.  Laurendine was named the 2003 Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year when the team tallied a 14-11-6 record.

She would next begin her prep head coaching career with an 11-15 record at Rockbridge County High School (Lexington, Va.) in 2006.  The 11 wins were the most in program history at that time.  Laurendine then coached for three seasons at Newnan High School (Newnan, Ga.) where her teams posted an 89-31 record and advanced to three state tournaments.  She was named the Area 4 5A coach of the year in 2006 and '09 and the District 14 4A Coach of the Year in 2007.

Laurendine returned to the college ranks as the head coach at NCAA Division  III The University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.).  Her six years there began with her being selected as the 2012 Southern Athletic Association Coach of the Year in her inaugural 2012 season when the team tallied a 14-11 record.  Her teams totaled a 68-88 record over her tenure.

Laurendine then began serving as the head coach at Mississippi College (Clinton, Miss.) in 2018.  The team totaled a 71-87 record in her six years at the NCAA Division II program.

During her 21 seasons as a collegiate head coach, her players totaled 18 all-conference accolades (10 at the University of the South, 8 at Mississippi College), were named the conference newcomer (2017) and freshman of the year (2022), the conference player of the year (2003), the AVCA All-South Region Freshman and Newcomer of the Year (2017), and garnered five AVCA Honorable Mention All-America (2017, 2022 [2], 2023 [2] and four NCAA All-Region awards (2022 [2], 2023 [2]).

Earning two of those AVCA Honorable Mention All-America laurels was her daughter, Lexie, in 2022 and '23.

Athletically herself, Laurendine played four seasons at Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.) where she earned both a bachelor's (1994) and master's (1996) degree in physical education.  The team posted a 157-39 record in her four years at the NAIA school.  She earned multiple First-Team All-America honors during her senior season, received the 1994 Fred Sington Award as Alabama's female amateur athlete of the year and was inducted into the Montevallo sports hall of fame in 1999.

She was an assistant coach at Montevallo for the 1994 and '95 seasons prior to accepting the head coaching position at West Alabama.

Her husband, Tommy, is the offensive line coach for the Navy football team, Lexie is an assistant volleyball coach at Wingate and youngest daughter,  Lakin, is a redshirt sophomore on the Arkansas volleyball team.
