Navy Wrestling Set for EIWA Road Test at Lehigh, Home Dual vs. George Mason

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy wrestling team (2-3, 1-0 EIWA) returns to dual action on Saturday when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) matchup against 20th-ranked Lehigh (5-6, 1-0 EIWA). The dual is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Leeman-Turner Arena. The Midshipmen will then return home to host George Mason (4-2) on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
 
Saturday's dual will be streamed on FloWrestling, while Sunday's match will air on the Navy Athletics YouTube channel.
 
Notes for traveling fans               
  • Vehicle access to the U.S. Naval Academy is restricted to drivers with a Department of Defense ID card. All other visitors must park outside USNA grounds.
  • Fans can either walk through Gate 1 security checkpoints or take the complimentary shuttles will be available from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
  • Anyone 18 years or older must present a Real ID or passport. Visitors 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Shuttles will operate from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. from the stadium's Blue/West parking lot, accessible via Gate 5 off Taylor Avenue. Parking is $10.

Danny Wask won his weight class to lead the Navy wrestling team to a fifth-place finish Jan. 4 at the Soldier Salute in Coralville, Iowa. Another group of Midshipmen competed at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., placing eighth overall.
 
Four Midshipmen finished among the top four in their weight classes at the Soldier Salute, while five earned top-eight finishes at the Southern Scuffle.
 
Wask went a perfect 5-0 to claim the 174-pound championship, capped by a 4-1 sudden-victory decision over Iowa's Gabe Arnold in the finals. He also recorded a 17-1 technical fall against unattached Paolo Ciatto, pinned Missouri's Kolten Oborny in 1:58 and added a 14-3 major decision over Iowa State's Jacob Helgeson. Wask advanced to the championship bout with an 8-2 victory over Nebraska's Tyler Eise.
 
Joining Wask on the podium at the Soldier Salute were Zyan Hall (third, 197), Caedyn Ricciardi (fourth, 141) and Spencer Lanosga (fourth, 285).
 
Navy's placewinners at the Southern Scuffle included Jonathan Ley (fourth, 157), Dylan Elmore (fifth, 165), Andrew Binni (fifth, 125), Nicholas Vafiadis (eighth, 141) and Payton Thomas (eighth, 197).

  • Navy has four wrestlers — Jonathan Ley, Dylan Elmore, Danny Wask and Spencer Lanosga — tied for the team lead with 14 victories this season.
  • Wask and Lanosga are also tied for the team lead with five wins over ranked opponents.
  • The Midshipmen return four wrestlers who earned victories in last season's upset win over Lehigh: Brendan Ferretti, Jonathan Ley, Dylan Elmore and Wask.
  • Navy has used a different starting lineup in four of its five duals this season.
  • Wask and Lanosga are the only Midshipmen to start and win all five dual matches this year.
  • Navy won a season-best eight matches by bonus points in its victory over Morgan State.
  • Team captain Kaemen Smith earned his 50th-career victory with an 11-7 decision over Oklahoma State's Cutter Sheets at the Southern Scuffle.
  • Ferretti made his season debut in the latest InterMat rankings at 32nd in 133 pounds.
  • Ferretti has won 10 of his last 13 matches after a 1-5 start, including five falls. His five falls this season lead the team and mark a career-best (he had six falls over his previous three seasons combined).

• Lehigh enters the weekend with a 5-6 record, including a 1-0 mark in EIWA duals.
• The Mountain Hawks are ranked 20th in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.
• Lehigh picked up two victories last weekend, including a 20-17 upset of 20th-ranked Cornell and opened EIWA play with a 32-7 win over American.

  • George Mason enters the weekend with a 4-2 record and a 1-0 mark in the MAC. The Patriots split a recent tri-meet, defeating Buffalo, 28-13, before falling to ninth-ranked N.C. State, 34-13.
  • The Patriots have four wrestlers ranked in the latest InterMat poll: 19th-ranked Cassidy (149), 21st-ranked DJ McGee (157), 31st-ranked Malachi DuVall (184) and 33rd-ranked Logan Messer (174).
  • DuVall leads the team with 17 wins, while McGee and Messer are tied for second with 14.
  • George Mason is led by head coach Frank Beasley, who is in his ninth season and owns a 69-66 career record.
 
Navy vs. George Mason               
• Navy and George Mason meet for the 13th time in a series that began in 1983.
