DANBURY, Conn. - Coming off a standout performance at Saturday's Army-Navy Star Meet,
Kody Tokunaga was recognized as the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Co-Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
After Navy's floor exercise lineup bolted the Mids into a 5.2-point lead over Army through the first of six events, the Black Knights looked to cut into their deficit and draw closer during the pommel horse, an event that they were favored on. Knowing this, Tokunaga calmly came up as the first Navy gymnast on the apparatus and turned in a career-best score of 13.35. The freshman from Palatine, Illinois recorded the highest execution score of the event as the judges gave him a 8.95 score for his 4.4-level routine. At the conclusion of the rotation, Tokunaga placed third overall, 0.05 points out of second and 0.15 out of first. As a team, Army was only able to shave 1.25 points off of its deficit as Navy went on to roll to the 308.2-303.0 victory and secure the program's eighth straight Star Meet victory.
In his young career this is the second ECAC Rookie of the Week nod for Tokunaga as he previously earned the honor on January 27.
The Navy men's gymnastics team will continue its early season action with the 2026 All-Academy Championship this Friday night in Fort Worth, Texas. First touch between Air Force, Army and Navy is set for 7:30 p.m.
