IRVINE, Calif. -- Herrick Legaspi and Aniketh Ainala each won two matches during a 4-1 victory by the Navy (16-14) men's tennis team over Air Force (4-6), Friday afternoon at The Racquet Club of Irvine in Irvine, Calif.

The victory was the second match of the day for the Mids as they also lost a 7-0 decision to UCI Irvine (5-5) at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

Navy started the last match of its spring break trip to Southern California by winning each of the three doubles matches against Air Force by the same score of 6-2.

Legaspi teamed with Charlie Spencer for a victory at No. 1 doubles over Jack Brown and Tyler Leaird in the first match to finish.  Navy's No. 2 tandem of Ayinala and Tommy Kim followed with a win over AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf.  The third and final match saw Lachlan Buckingham and Jake Young defeat Phillip Deaton and Matthew Staton at No. 3.

Legaspi then played well at No. 1 singles in defeating Deaton by the score of 6-3, 6-1.  Tingleaf would win his No. 5 match against George Cutone, 6-1, 6-2, to slice the lead in half.  J.J. Etterbeek made the score 3-1 when he posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Staton at the No. 4 flight.  Ayinala then registered a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles over Brown to close play.

In the remaining matches, Kim held a 7-5, 6-5 lead at No. 3 singles and Steve Nguyen was leading 5-7, 6-4, 3-2 at the No. 6 flight.

The outcome stopped a two-match losing streak by the Mids to the Falcons.  Additionally, Air Force had already posted a 4-2 win over Army and defeated No. 57 BYU by the score of 6-1 this season.

Navy's morning match against UC Irvine, a team which had suffered five defeats to teams found in this week's national rankings, was much closer than the final score indicated.

The lone doubles match in which UCI was able to separate from Navy was at the No. 3 flight where Mason Bui and Ruining Huang defeated Nguyen and Daniel Seo by the score of 6-2.  The Anteaters secured the point when their No. 2 team of Tal Goodman and Hiroki Sakagawa held off Cutone and Etterbeek, 7-5.  Also, the Navy team of Ethan Garcia and Kim held a 5-4 lead in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles against Max Fardanesh and Rohan Sachdev.

The Anteaters would win all six singles matches in straight sets.  Looking deeper at the scores shows that one set was decided in a tiebreaker, three had the score of 6-4 and two other were determined by the score of 6-3.

Navy is now off for a little more than a week until it plays matches at home against Boston University and at James Madison on Sunday, March 22.
