Navy Sprint Football Back On Road To Face Pennsylvania Saturday

The Navy sprint football team will continue its drive towards the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) championship Saturday night when they travel to historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., to face Pennsylvania at 6:30 p.m.

The Midshipmen enter the game with a 4-1 overall record, including a 2-0 mark in CSFL play. Navy controls its own destiny in the CSFL championship with two games remaining in the season. Road victories over both Penn and Army (Nov. 9, 7 p.m.) would clinch Navy?s 28th-overall league title, and its first since the 1997 campaign.

On Oct. 26, Navy concluded its home schedule by drilling CSFL-rival Princeton, 34-6. Quarterback Chris Ashinhurst (So./Stafford, Va.) ran for his team-leading fifth touchdown while also completing a pair of touchdown passes, helping the Mids to a 28-0 halftime lead. Team co-captain Doug Neves (Sr./Klamath Falls, Ore.) scored his first-two touchdowns of the season on receptions of 56 and 71 yards ???the former coming from Ashinhurst in the second quarter, and the latter coming from backup quarterback Steve Troy (Sr./Barrington, R.I.) in the fourth quarter.

Craig Salveson (Sr./Williston, N.D.) picked up CSFL Defensive-Player-of-the-Week honors after his seven-tackle (two for loss) performance against the Tigers. Along with Ike Turner (Sr./Shreveport, La.) (Sept. 26) and Chris Zachary (So./Frisco, Texas) (Oct. 16), Salveson is the third Mid to pick up the award this season.

The Quakers come into Saturday?s contest with a 3-1 record, and have split their two CSFL games to date. They are coming off a resounding 41-3 CSFL victory over Cornell, Oct. 26. Junior running back Mark Gannon, the CSFL?s leading rusher (95 carries, 527 yards, six touchdowns), garnered his second CSFL Offensive Player of the Week award (Oct. 9) this week after toting the pigskin 19 times for 102 yards and four touchdowns against the Big Red.
