Navy Sprint Football Garners Numerous CSFL, Team Awards

The Navy sprint football team, which went 6-1 in the 2001 campaign and took home its 28th Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) title by going 4-0 in league play, received numerous post-season honors from the league, it was announced last week.
Leading the charge for the Mids was quarterback Chris Ashinhurst (So./Stafford, Va.). In addition to being named the team?s Most Valuable Player award, Ashinhurst received the CSFL MVP after leading his team to a 17-10, overtime victory over arch-rival Army Nov. 9 to send second-year head coach Maj. Austin ?Sparky? Renforth, USMC, (9-4 record, 6-2 CSFL) out of the coaching ranks with a victory. Ashinhurst was the team?s leading scorer, having rushed 90 times for 251 yards and six touchdowns. He also completed 56-of-110 passes for 809 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions (127.6 passer efficiency rating).
?Without Chris, we are a .500 football team,? said Renforth of Ashinhurst.
Offensively, both wing back Chris Rush (So./Pittsburg, Texas) and offensive lineman Kip Rainey (Jr./Portsmouth, R.I.) were named first-team all-league by the CSFL. Rush toted the pigskin 30 times for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also hauling in 17 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Rainey was a mainstay in the trenches for the Midshipmen, who averaged 176.7 yards per game on the ground.
A quintet of Navy defensive standouts also garnered first-team all-league accolades. John Collins (So./Toledo, Ohio), who also received the team?s Schuffleberger Award as the MVP of the N-Star game with Army (16 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack), registered the team?s third-highest tackles tally (20 unassisted, 39 overall), compiled seven tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks. Defensive linemen Matt Olson (Sr./Wheaton, Ill.) (47 tackles, three sacks, team-high two fumble recoveries) and Steve Healy (Jr./Washington, Pa.) (29 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery), and safeties Craig Salveson (Sr./Williston, N.D.) (team-high 48 tackles, one interception, three pass break-ups) and Chris Zachary (So./Frisco, Texas) (27 tackles, team-high four interceptions, fumble recovery) were also named to the all-league first-team.
Navy?s final first-team selection was kicker/punter Charles Nash (Jr./Fairfax, Va.). Nash?s 31-yard field goal at Pennsylvania Nov. 3 gave Navy a 9-6 victory over the host Quakers, and kept the Mids in the CSFL title hunt. On the season, he was good on 19-of-22 point after try kicks, as well as five-of-seven field goals. Nash was just as valuable to the Mids as a punter. He punted the ball 35 times for a 35.4 yards-per-punt average, with a remarkable ratio of punts downed inside the 20-yard line (six) to touchbacks (one).
Offensive lineman Michael Valenti (Sr./West Deal, N.J.) received the team?s Sexton Award for his leadership abilities, while John Schindel (So./Pickerington, Ohio) (25 tackles, one fumble recovery) and Francis Pascucci (Fr./Pine Bush, N.Y.) received the W.J. Gooding ?52 Most Improved Player and John S. Degnen ?52 Most Outstanding Freshman awards, respectively.
