Navy Sprint Football Defeats Frostburg State JV, 37-22

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ?? Navy quarterback Chris Ashinhurst (So./Stafford, Va.) accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) and gained 182 yards of total offense, as the Midshipmen (2-0) defeated the junior varsity team of Frostburg State (Md.), 37-22, Sunday night at Rip Miller Field.
The visiting Bobcats opened the scoring with 7:16 remaining in the first quarter, when quarterback Jeremy Strother connected with Randy Belt (eight receptions, 100 yards) on a 41-yard touchdown pass. Frostburg State?s two-point conversion attempt was intercepted.
The Mids responded by reeling off a five-play, 55-yard drive following the ensuing kickoff. Antonio Lozada (So./Orland Park, Ill.) rumbled into the end zone from five yards away, and following Charles Nash?s (Jr./Fairfax, Va.) four point-after-try kicks on the night, Navy held a 7-6 lead.
After the Bobcats? Lee Chisholm recovered a blocked punt in the end zone late in the opening frame to put Frostburg in the lead, 12-7, Navy scored 30 unanswered points over the next two-plus quarters en route to victory. Ashinhurst (18 carries, 44 yards; 8-for-18 passing, 134 yards, one INT) twisted his way into the end zone on a one-yard quarterback sneak 5:24 into the second quarter to put the Midshipmen in the lead, 13-12.
With 54 seconds left in the first half, Ashinhurst called his own number, sprinting for an 18-yard touchdown run, and Navy took a 20-12 lead into the locker room.
The Midshipmen defense, coming off a 38-0 shutout of Delaware Valley College?s (Pa.) junior varsity team on Sept. 23, caused five Bobcat turnovers (three interceptions, two fumble recoveries) and held the visitors to 212 yards of total offense. Jamie Glines (So./Modesto, Calif.) led the defensive effort by intercepting one pass, recovering a fumble, and breaking up three passes.
?We are right where we want to be,? said Navy second-year head coach Maj. Austin Renforth, USMC. ?We know we?ll have to step up our game next week against Army (Anthracite Bowl, Blue Mountain, Pa., Oct. 6, 12 Noon). They are a better team than we have faced thus far, and we are going to have to take it to them to come away with a victory.?
