Brian Nagle Wins 2004 CSFL MVP

Quarterback Brian Nagle was named the 2004 CSFL MVP Tuesday.

Annapolis, Md. - Navy sprint football quarterback Brian Nagle (Davenport, Iowa), who is an exchange cadet from the Air Force Academy, was named the 2004 Collegiate Sprint Football League's Most Valuable Player, announced Tuesday by the league.

In addition to Nagle, 20 other Midshipmen received All-CSFL accolades, including eight first-team selections.

Nagle's MVP marked the third time in the last four seasons a Navy quarterback has won the award. Former standout Chris Ashinhurst (Class of '04), who served as an assistant coach this season, was named the MVP in both 2001 and '02.

Nagle led Navy to an undefeated season (6-0 overall and 4-0 CSFL) and the program's 23rd outright league championship. Nagle was second in the league in passing yards (1,246) and touchdowns (10). He was also tied for first among the top-five quarterbacks in the league for fewest interceptions thrown with four.

Senior co-captains, offensive lineman Matt Crompton (Bedford, N.H.) and linebacker Charles Lewis (Blacksburg, Va.), were selected to the league's first team. It was the second-consecutive year Lewis was named to the conference's first team, while Crompton earned the honor for the first time after garnering spots on the second team the past two seasons.

Lewis finished the season with 22 tackles, including 5.5 for loss for minus-26 yards, and five pass breakups. Crompton was part of an offensive line that paved the way for Navy to average 219 yards rushing per game.

Senior defensive lineman Dane Brown (Columbia, Md.) recorded a team-high seven sacks for minus-29 yards and was awarded by being named to the league's first team for the third-straight season. Brown, who was named the CSFL Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, also recorded 8.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for minus-52 yards and blocked a kick.

A pair of running backs, senior Amir Shareef (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior Jake Owens (Pensacola, Fla.), were also recognized on the league's first team. Shareef scored a team-high 11 rushing touchdowns, while Owens led the team with 395 yards rushing. Owens ranked first among the CSFL's top-five rushers with an average of 6.7 yards per carry.

Also being named First-Team All-CSFL selections were sophomore defensive back Marcus Walters (Richardson, Texas), sophomore defensive lineman David Novotney (Chesterton, Ind.) and freshman kicker Joey Bullen (St. Simons Island, Ga.). Walters registered a team-high 11 pass breakups, while Novotney was second on the team in tackles (35) and tackles for loss (7.5 for minus-32 yards). Bullen ranked second on the team in scoring with 48 points. He drilled two field goals of 44 and 49 yards, respectively, during the season.

Eight Mids were named to the CSFL's second team, including sophomore offensive lineman Jason Barnes (Laguna Hills, Calif.), junior running back Trevor Garabedian-Prophet, junior wide receiver Kevin Laughary (Morris, Ill.), sophomore wide receiver A.J. Storrs (Jackson, Wyo.), sophomore linebacker Ryan Engle (Reed City, Mich.), junior defensive backs Andrew Holmes (Savannah, Ga.) and Patrick Flores (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and junior tight end Jonathan Chunn (Pulaski, Tenn.)

Four Navy players garnered honorable-mention honors, including sophomore offensive lineman K.C. Dalton (Reno, Nev.), junior defensive lineman John Pico (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior linebacker Francis Pascucci (Walden, N.Y.) and senior defensive back Brett Abbamonte (Damascus, Md.).
