ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman running back Enrique Harris (Crawfordville, Fla.) ran for a team-best 106 yards on five carries with two touchdowns in reserve action as Navy defeated Princeton 98-0 in sprint football play on Friday night at Rip Miller Field. Navy improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in CSFL play, while Princeton drops to 0-5 and 0-3 in league action.
The Midshipmen scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions in leading 49-0 after the first quarter of play, racking up over 300 yards of total offense in the process. Navy scored touchdowns on its first two possessions in the second quarter and found the endzone near the end of the half to take a 70-0 lead into the break.
Navy's offense gained 704 yards of total offense, with the rushing game accounting for 580 of those yards on 59 carries (9.8 ypc). The Mids rushing attack found the endzone for a school-record 11 times, with six different runners scoring touchdowns. Besides Harris' 106 yards, five other Midshipmen runners carried for 65 or more yards on the night.
Senior Hayden Stevens (Hilo, Hawai'i), one of 27 seniors playing in the final home of their career, rushed for 97 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns. Freshman Alfonso Meidus (Leechburg, Pa.) carried 15 times for 94 yards with two touchdown runs. Navy main trio of running backs, senior Trevor Garabedian-Prophet (Ventura, Calif.), sophomore Richard Engel (Medford, N.J.) and senior Jake Owens (Pensacola, Fla.) rushed for 66, 65 and 65 yards, respectively, in limited action.
Senior quarterback James Olsen (Germantown, Tenn.) completed 8-of-13 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns before being lifted in the first quarter. Junior Chris Marsh (New Alexandria, Pa.) took the snaps for the rest of the first half, then freshman D.J. Green (Indianapolis, Ind.) played the third quarter and sophomore Jason Feipel (Walcott, Iowa) saw some action in the fourth quarter.
Six different Midshipmen hauled in passes in Friday night's win. Senior Theo Williams (Artesia, N.M.) led the way with three pass receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown. Williams' seven touchdown receptions on the season tie him for first in program history with Adam Matthews and Ben Wilson from 2000.
Senior linebacker Brandon Barrett (Marion, Ind.) led the team with seven tackles, two of which went for a loss of four yards. Seniors Jake Dove (Annapolis, Md.), Shane Kraft (Columbus, Ga.), Calvin Parsons (Lilburn, Ga.), Duane Willoughby (LaBelle, Fla.), junior Donald Jordan (Accokeek, Md.) and freshmen Justin Belmore (Dover, N.H.) and Justin Nabozna (New Fairfield, Conn.) each made four stops in the victory.
Navy's defense held Princeton to 40 yards of total offense and five first downs in the contest. The Midshipmen front line contained the Tigers to 39 yards rushing while limiting the visitors to only one yard passing on 5-of-29 passing.
Friday's shutout was Navy's fourth of the season and the second-time the Midshipmen have posted back-to-back shutouts in 2005. Two weeks ago, Navy blanked Cornell 7-0 in Annapolis, before which the Mids opened the season with a 35-0 win over VMI and 41-0 victory at Cornell.
The Midshipmen three points in their first five games this year are the fewest yielded by a Navy defense in its first-five games of the season. Before this season's performance, the 1952 squad held the previous-best mark of seven points over the opening five contests.
Navy's defense has yet to allow a touchdown in the first five games in 2005. The last touchdown scored on the Midshipmen defense came in the 2004 Star Game against Army, a span of 342 minutes and 54 seconds.
Navy has outscored Princeton 298-60 in the last four meetings, dating back to the 2003 season. The Midshipmen defeated the Tigers 77-16 and 61-20 in last year's contests and 62-24 two seasons ago. The 77 points in the first meeting of 2004 set the program-record for points scored in a game before tonight's effort.
The Midshipmen head on the road to conclude its season, starting with a trip to Philadelphia to battle against Penn on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. Navy wraps up its season with a trip up to West Point, N.Y., for the annual Star Game versus Army on Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. This year's game will be broadcast live in front of a national audience on ESPNU at Army's Michie Stadium.
