2005 Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational Results
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Navy golf team placed 15th out of 15 teams at the highly-competitive 2005 Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Toledo, Ohio. Navy, which posted a 114-over par 966, played among some of the premier golf programs in the country, including five teams that finished in the top 30 at last year's NCAA Championship and two that finished in the top seven. The Inverness Club will serve as the host of the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championship and has also hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including four U.S. Opens, one U.S. Amateur, the 1986 and '93 PGA Championships and the 2003 U.S. Senior Open.
Anchored by 2005 Walker Cup member Matt Every, Florida edged out Southern California for the team title with a 28-over par 880 (298-295-287). The Gators pulled out all the stops in the final round, shooting a 3-over par 287 on the final day. Speaking of Every, the senior All-American shot a low score of 3-under par 68 in the final round to take his first individual title of the 2005-06 season. He posted an even-213 (74-71-68), tying the tournament record for lowest 54-hole score with former Kentucky standout John Holmes and Michigan grad Scott Hayes. USC, who finished sixth at last year's NCAA Championship finished second with a three-round 883 (+31), followed by Texas (888, +36), Kent State (892, +40) and Coastal Carolina (893, +41).
Navy struggled in the first round, shooting a 49-over par 333, but settled down over the second 18 holes where is posted a 27-over par 311. In the final round of competition, Navy once again was stumped by the greens, recording a 38-over par 322 to finish the tournament 114-over.
Sophomore Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) was Navy's top finisher, producing a 24-over par 237 (86-70-80) to tie for 63rd. Schoen had a solid round where he shot even-par to push forward in the standings. Junior Bryan Stoniecki (Montgomery, Ill.) was two strokes behind in 67th with a three-round mark of 26-over par 239 (81-78-80). Rounding out the Navy squad were Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) in 71st (80-83-81=244), Jeremy Garner (Fayetteville, Ga.) in 73rd (86-79-81=246) and team captain Michael Pierce (Houston, Texas) (86-83-90=259).
The Midshipmen return to action next Monday when they travel to Delaware to compete in the Rehoboth Beach Invitational.
