ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) qualified for the IC4A Championship in two events on Saturday as the Navy men's track and field team defeated American, Penn, Robert Morris, VCU and Winthrop in Halsey Field House. Navy racked up 196 points, followed by Penn's 120 points, Robert Morris' 102.5 points, VCU's 58.5 points, American's 37 points and Winthrop's 12 points.
Harris first qualified for the IC4A Championship in the 500-meter run. The sophomore crossed the finish line in 1:03.35 for first-place honors, tying his career-best time he set versus Princeton on Jan. 8, 2005. In the final event of the meet, Harris ran the third-leg of the fastest 4x800-meter relay. Senior Joshua Sink (Welcome, N.C.), sophomore Lucas Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.), Harris and sophomore Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas) combined to qualify with a time of 7:50.58.
Senior Jamar Green (Pineville, La.) also combined in two of Navy's nine first-place efforts on Saturday. Green paced the field with a 50.03-second showing in the 400-meter run, the helped in the first-place 4x400-meter relay unit. Junior Michael Levinson (Willingboro, N.J.), sophomore William Ricks (Sussex, Va.), junior Cameron Lindsay (Kernersville, N.C.) and Green teamed up for a time of 3:20.37.
Sophomore Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.), last week's Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week, capped Navy's track-event victories with a 1:56.10 showing in the 800-meter run.
Junior Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) topped all competitors in the high jump with a season-best 6'10-3/4" (2.10 meters) in the high jump. The clearance was White's highest since a 6'11" (2.11 meters) jump versus Army on Feb. 7, 2004.
Sophomore Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) matched his career-high in the shot put to claim first on Saturday. Hunter uncorked a throw of 54'1-1/4" (16.49 meters) to equal the mark he set at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 29, 2005.
Junior Kelly Stephens (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) also posted first-place efforts in field events for the Midshipmen. Stephens cleared 15'1" (4.60 meters) in the pole vault, while Marshall posted a 46'6" (14.17 meters) mark in the triple jump.
Lindsay also qualified for the IC4A Championship in March with a 1:05.14 showing in the 500-meter run to place second behind Harris. The time was only .07-second off his career-fastest time of 1:05:07 at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 29, 2005.
The Midshipmen also received solid performances from senior Marcus Scarborough (Columbia, S.C.) and sophomore Brandon Vier (Cypress, Texas). Scarborough ran the 55-meter hurdles in 7.81 seconds in the prelims before placing second with a 7.83-second effort in the finals. Vier posted a career-fastest time of 6.61 seconds in the 55-meter dash to finish in fourth-place on Saturday.
Navy (5-1) remains home to host Mount St. Mary's and James Madison next Saturday (Jan. 21) in Halsey Field House. The meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
