PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior high jumper Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) qualified for the IC4A Championship with one of Navy's four first-place finishes in field events, yet was not enough as Princeton defeated Navy 100.5-80.5 in men's track and field action on Sunday afternoon. The Midshipmen dropped to 0-1 on the campaign after opening the 2005-06 season 37 days ago in the non-team scoring Navy Invitational.
"We looked a little rusty today," said Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. "We did pretty well in the field events today. Princeton went 1-2 on us six events, and that really hurt us. They just looked like a little better team than us."
White, the 2005 Patriot League indoor high jump champion, cleared 6'9" (2.06 meters) in the high jump event in meeting the IC4A Championship standard. The jump was the highest for White since a 6'11" (2.11 meters) versus Army on Feb. 7, 2004.
Sophomore Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) paced all throwers with a toss of 52'6" (16.00 meters) in the shot put. Last month, Hunter qualified for the IC4A Championship with a 52'-effort (15.85 meters) in the Navy Invitational.
Classmate Bo Fisher (Longview, Wash.) pulled down a first-place mark in the pole vault with a showing of 15'1" (4.60 meters). Fellow sophomore Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) capped Navy's first-place performances in field events with a 45'1/4"-mark (13.72 meters) in the triple jump.
The Midshipmen corralled three first-place times in the track events on Sunday. Navy's best track performance came in the 800-meter run, as the visitors owned the top-two spots in the event. Sophomore Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.) crossed the finish line first with a time of 1:57.65, while sophomore Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) immediately followed with a 1:58.07-showing.
Sophomore Lucas Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.) led all runners in the 1,000-meter run with an effort of 2:33.05. Navy's 4x800-meter relay team of sophomore Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas), Burke, Meekins and Harris crossed the finish line in 7:54.77 to place first. Kozy also finished second in the mile run with a career-best time of 4:14.26.
The Midshipmen come back to Annapolis to host Penn, Winthrop, Robert Morris and VCU on Saturday (Jan. 14) in Halsey Field House at 11:30 a.m.
