ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy men's track & field junior Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) broke the school record in the 800-meter run to highlight four IC4A-qualifying performances during the season-opening, non-scoring Navy Invitational on Friday night in Halsey Field House.
Harris broke the indoor 800-meter run record that he and Doug Kay (2002) shared by .02 second, finishing with a time of 1:50.71. His performance was nearly five seconds faster than the second-place runner and qualified him for the IC4A Championship in March.
"Paul was incredible today, he ran the race so easily," stated Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. "More importantly, at this early phase of training, I think he could have a banner year."
Junior Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) qualified for the IC4A Championship in the triple jump with an event-winning distance of 46'11-3/4" (14.32 meters). He also finished fourth on the day in the long jump with a 22'7-3/4" (6.90 meters) mark.
Two of Navy's relays will advance to the IC4A meet courtesy of their season-opening performances on Friday. The 4x400-meter relay posted a time of 3:19.18 to win the event, while the distance medley relay unit finished second with a 10:15.15 clocking.
Junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai'i) also produced solid marks in two events. Belany soared 23'3/4" (7.03 meters), a career-best mark, to finish third in the long jump. The junior posted a time of 7.84 seconds during the prelims of the 55-meter hurdles to advance to the finals, where he placed fourth with a 7.87-second showing.
The Midshipmen also tallied three other individual event victories on the evening. Freshman Ricky Griffith (Piedmont, Calif.) won the mile run with a time of 4:24.63, while junior Andrew Barber (Carrollton, Texas) uncorked a toss of 50'4-1/2" (15.35 meters) in the shot put and senior Kelly Stephens (Houston, Texas) and junior Kraegen Bramer (Auburn, Calif.) tied each other for first with a 14'7-1/4" (4.45 meters) clearance in the pole vault.
The Midshipmen return to action on Jan. 6, 2007, when they host Princeton in a dual-meet at Halsey Field House. The action is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
