Grant Leads Mids to Fourth Place Finish

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Led by the performance of its senior captain Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.), the Navy men's track and field team won a pair of events and earned a fourth-place finish on Saturday afternoon in the second of four straight home meets at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.

Grant paced the field in 3,000-meter run, winning by nearly nine seconds and posting an IC4A-qualifying time of 8:24.18. Sophomore teammate Robert Alvarado (San Francisco, Calif.) also scored points for Navy in the 3k race, turning in a third-place effort with his 8:34.36 clocking.

Grant also ran a leg as part of the Mids' winning distance medley relay squad. The Navy foursome captured the relay with a time of 10:13.78

In the 800, sophomore David Ash (Williamson, Mich.) was Navy's top performer, taking second-place honors with a time of 1:55.88.

Senior Chris Bordino (Gastonia, N.C.) led a strong effort for the Mids in the 35-lb. weight throw event. Bordino produced a career-best toss of 60'5" (18.41m) to earn runner-up honors in the event.

Junior teammate Mark Van Orden (Morris Plains, N.J.) finished fourth with a throw of 57'3 (17.45m), while his classmate Tyrell Arment (Wamblee, S.D.) took fifth with a 52'6-1/2" (16.01m) effort.

In the shot put, Navy was led by first-year thrower Chris Boniwell (San Diego, Calif.). Boniwell took fifth place in the event with a distance of 44'7-1/2" (13.6m).

The Mids also received a solid contribution from freshman Ken Bunnell (St. Johnsbury, Va.), who finished fifth in the mile run in 4:18.26.

Princeton topped the five-team field with an impressive all-around performance, winning 10 of the 17 events contested to finish with 222 points. The Tigers' Ivy League counterpart, Penn, took second with 100 points, while VCU finished in third with 86 points narrowly edging the host Mids (83 pts). American University rounded out the five-team field with 31 points.

Navy will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it hosts Mount St. Mary's, UNC-Wilmington and William & Mary at the Wesley A. Brown Field House. The meet is slated for a noon start.
