WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 12th-ranked Navy squash team opened the 2009 calendar year with a solid effort, sweeping No. 24 George Washington, 9-0, in the nation's capital Wednesday evening. It was the Mids' first match since Dec. 5 when they cruised past Haverford, 9-0.
"It looks like our seven days of training in California over the holiday break really paid dividends, because I thought we played very well tonight," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "It was a fantastic match against a much improved team. I?think George Washington is going to be a pretty good threat in the near future because they are beginning to offer squash scholarships.
"I hope to keep the momentum going, as I'd like for us to have the same intensity on Sunday when we face a strong Williams team at home in Halsey Field House."
Improving to 18-2 this season, Navy has turned in 18 or more wins in five of the last six years. This season alone, 17 of the 18 wins have come by way of sweeps, giving up just one game in an 8-1 win over Connecticut College.
Wednesday's win extended Navy's winning streak to 17 consecutive over the Colonials.
While junior Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) anchored the Mids' win with a 9-1, 9-2, 9-1 win over GW's top player, Jose Calderon, Navy received strong performances throughout the ladder. Sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) and senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) flip-flopped positions on the ladder with Seidel earning a 9-2, 9-0, 9-8 victory over junior Max Collins at the No. 4 position. Hartley, meanwhile, took a 9-3, 9-3, 9-2 decision over second-year standout Mike Bower.
Making his way back into the lineup was senior Will Pappas (Philadelphia, Pa.), who boosted his winning streak to seven in a row this season. Pappas was last seen in action on Nov. 15 when he took down Columbia's Rohan Khatau in three games. He dusted off his racquet Wednesday to produce a come-from-behind win over GW rookie Sam Moreno. After falling behind a game, he came back to take a 2-1 lead following 9-6 and 9-0 wins in the second and third games, respectively. Moreno, however, evened the match by taking game four, 9-7. Pappas, though, outlasted his foe by taking the match behind a 9-3 win in the fifth game.
The Mids will be back in action on Sunday when they play host to 10th-ranked Williams at 10:00 am at Halsey Field House.
