Navy Squash Players Honored for Their Classroom Success

Navy's Lucas Spiro (Jr / Buffalo, N.Y.), Matt Wang (Sr / Malvern, Pa.), Alexander Orr (Jr / Haverford, Pa.), Matthew Kang (So / Malvern, Pa.), Wenqing Tang (Fr / Villanova, Pa.) and Avinash Uppuluri (Fr / Short Hills, N.J.) have been named to the 37-player Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference All-Academic Team it was announced this week. It's the first time Navy has had six players earn the conference's academic award.

The Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference is the first squash-specific collegiate athletic conference in the United States and was officially sanctioned by the College Squash Association Board of Directors in May of 2019. The conference includes Dickinson, Drexel, Franklin & Marshall, MIT, Navy and Virginia. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.50 cumulative GPA.

Spiro, a four-time selection for the MASC All-Academic Team, has been a standout in the classroom since his arrival in the fall of 2021. A Trident Scholar at the Naval Academy, he owns a 3.96 grade-point average in astrophysics and stands 36th in his class of 1,069 students in Academic Order of Merit and 30th in Overall Order of Merit. He has been named to the Superintendent's (3x), Commandant's (6x) and Dean's Lists (3x) multiple times over his four years at the Academy.

A mathematics with economics major, Wang has put together a 3.51 GPA through seven semesters. He has been named to the Commandant's List six times, the Dean's List three times and the Superintendent's List once. He is among the top 35 percent within his class in Academic Order of Merit. Wang has been named to the MASC All-Academic Team three times.

Orr, who boasts a 3.78 GPA as a member of the honors program in naval architecture and marine engineering, is a three-time recipient of this award. He stands among the top 20 percent of his class of 1,092 students in both Overall and Academic Order of Merit.

Kang, a data science major, has been stellar in the classroom where he has earned a 3.97 GPA. He has been named to the Commandant's List in each of his first three semesters, while earning Superintendent's List accolades twice and Dean's List honors once. He currently stands among the top 4 percent of his class of 1,114 students in Academic Order of Merit and top 7 percent in Overall Order of Merit.

Tang, who recently selected nuclear engineering as his field of study, put forth a 4.00 GPA in his first semester at the Naval Academy and was named to the Dean's List. He currently stands atop his class of 1,162 students in Academic Order of Merit and ranks just outside of the top 10 percent of his class in Overall Order of Merit.

Uppuluri turned in a 3.97 GPA in his first semester at the Naval Academy and has selected foreign area studies (Asia) as his major moving into his second year. He is ranked among the top 4 percent of his class of 1,162 students in Academic Order of Merit, the top 8 percent in Military Order of Merit and top 7 percent in Overall Order of Merit.

Wang, Orr and Tang also enjoyed an outstanding season on the court where each of the three garnered All-Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference recognition.
