GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Despite a valiant effort on the part of the Navy squash team, ninth-ranked Western Ontario handed the Mids their first loss of the 2009-10 season Sunday in what was Navy's final match at the three-day Denison Tournament. The 14th-ranked Mids are now 6-1 on the season.

Navy headed into Sunday's matchup having been untested, as the Mids had swept all six opponents to date. Western Ontario, meanwhile, opened its season this weekend with seven players ranked among the top 100, while another two are among the top 150.

Junior Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.) sealed Navy's lone win of the match behind an 11-4, 11-7, 11-3 effort over Bruce Burrowes to remain unbeaten this season.

While the Mids dropped the remaining eight matches, Navy was able to extend three of the eight to extra games. At No. 1, team captain Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) evened his match by winning game two, 11-9, but Western Ontario's Brian Hong just edged out the Navy senior in the final two games, 11-9 and 12-10. Meanwhile, junior Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) opened his match against 74th-ranked Strachan Jarvis with an 11-6 win, but Jarvis knotted things up by clipping Seidel in the second, 12-10, and used the momentum swing to take the match in four games. Navy newcomer Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) also took game one in his match against Joel Rothwell, ranked 110th, but Rothwell's experience proved to be the deciding factor as he won the next three games to take the match.

Navy will be back in action next weekend when they play host to a three-day tournament in which it will face Stanford (Fri., 4:00 pm), Fordham (Fri., 7:00 pm), Hobart (Sat., 11:00 am), Vanderbilt (Sat., 3:00 pm), USC (Sun., 9:00 am) and Columbia (Sun., 12:00 pm).
