ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy freshman Brian Zitterkopf (Pace, Fla.) stands in third after the first four events of the heptathlon highlighting the Midshipmen's efforts on the opening day of the 2009 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Academy's Wesley A. Brown Field House on Friday afternoon.

Zitterkopf produced a total of 2,727 points in Friday's 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump events. The first-year multi-eventer's top scoring output came in his signature event, the high jump, where he bested the field with a PR clearance of 6'8-1/4" (2.04m) to earn 840 points.

The Pace, Fla. native also exceeded the 600-point mark in both the 60-meter dash in 7.57 for 690 points and the long jump with a distance of 20'-10-3/4" (6.37m) for 668 points. Entering Saturday, he sits only 117 points behind Lehigh's Edwin Schuck's first-place score of 2,844 points and just 50 points out of second.

"Brian performed extremely well for us today," said Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. "He achieved a personal best in his top event, the high jump. Tomorrow he should do fairly well in both the hurdles and the 1,000m. Now, he will have to be ready to score some points in the pole vault, which is not one of his strongest events, but I think he has a good chance to find himself in scoring position."

Freshman Isaac Teichgrab (Camano Island, Wash.) also competed for the Mids. Teichgrab got off to a strong start in the first event of the day, tying for third and earning 772 points with a 7.32 clocking in the 60-meter dash, but was forced to withdraw from the competition after suffering a hamstring injury during warm-ups for the long jump.

The final-three events of the heptathlon (60-meter hurdles, pole vault, 1,000-meter run) will be contested on Saturday at 8:45 a.m., followed by the first of the field events at 10:30 a.m. and the track events at 1 p.m.
