GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Led by senior captain David Miller's (Chillicothe, Ohio) 2-over par 74 on Sunday, the Navy golf team turned in its low round of the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate with a 17-over par 305 in the final round and a 74-over par 938 for the 54-round event, finishing 17th out of 17 teams.
"I think we've found out the areas that we need to improve on between now and our home tournament in two weeks which will serve as our final tune-up before the conference tournament," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "Though I certainly wish we would have performed at a little higher level, this was a great opportunity for our team to play against a strong field. I was especially pleased to see us improve upon our scores each day and we had a particularly strong effort in the final round."
The host, East Carolina, paced the field with an 11-over par 875 to claim the team title, while James Madison's Tim Driver enjoyed a spectacular final round that saw him jump from ninth place to first after posting the low round of the tournament with a 7-under par 65 to finish the event 5-under.
After beginning the tournament in dead last with a 13-over par 85 in the opening round, Miller adjusted his game and took note of the course to improve in each of his next two rounds. The veteran member of the team produced a 2-over par 74 in the final round, the low round by a Mid over the weekend. It boosted him into 66th place where he turned in an 18-over par 234 (85-75-74).
Finishing alongside Miller in 66th was second-year standout Josh Ziska (Camarillo, Calif.), who also concluded the tournament with his low round of the weekend. On Sunday, he produced a 5-over par 77 to finish the event also with an 18-over par 234 (78-79-77).
Senior Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) broke an 80 on Sunday, turning in a 4-over par 76 over the final 18 holes to finish tied with teammate Marcus Heyland (Fort Madison, Iowa) for 79th with a 22-over par 238 (81-81-76). Heyland, a sophomore, also posted his low round of the weekend with a 6-over par 78 (81-79-78).
Senior Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) closed out play for the Mids in 81st with a three-round 239 (80-80-79).
The Midshipmen will use the next two weeks to prepare for the annual Navy Spring Invitational set to be played Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19, at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
