Sprint Football Falls to Penn in Allegiance Bowl, 24-14

Oct. 2, 2010

Final Stats

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Penn Quakers scored 14 points in the second half and held on to defeat Navy, 24-14, on Saturday afternoon in the sixth-annual Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The loss ended Navy's incredible 25-game winning streak, which began in 2006.

"Penn is a great team," said Navy head coach Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC. "We were not disciplined today - we turned the ball over too much and had way too many penalties."

Navy had a season-high four fumbles and was penalized 10 times for a total of 95 yards.

With Navy leading, 14-10, just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Penn quarterback Todd Busler hit Whit Shaw with an 83-yard touchdown pass to give the Quakers the lead.

The hard-hitting game took its toll on both offenses in the fourth quarter, as neither team could hold the ball for more than five plays on the next five drives after Penn took the lead.

After Penn pinned Navy deep in its own territory, Anthony DiBella forced Navy quarterback Tyler Terronez to fumble in the end zone, and Matt Cuccinello fell on the ball to extend Penn's lead. Raiam Santos' extra point extended Penn's lead to 24-14 with 4:01 left in the game.

Both the Quaker and Midshipmen offenses got off to successful starts early on, as each scored on its opening drive to begin the game.

Penn opened the game by going 69 yards in 11 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Mike Bagnoli capped the drive with a five-yard touchdown run.

The Midshipmen responded on their first drive, as they also went 69 yards to pay dirt to knot the game at 7.

Terronez went 2-of-3 for 25 yards on the scoring drive, with both completions coming on third down. Terronez's first completion came on the third play of the drive when he hit JoJo Catrini for 10 yards on a 3rd-and-6 play to keep Navy moving. Terronez then found Catrini in the back corner of the end zone on a 3rd-and-13 play to pull the Mids even with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter.

Santos gave the Quakers the lead, 10-7, when he connected on a 39-yard field goal with 10:17 left in the second quarter.

But again, Navy responded on its following drive. Both Jordan Foley (18 yards) and D.J. Hooper (33 yards) picked up big chunks of yardage to get the Mids inside the Penn 10-yard line. The Mids then reclaimed the lead on a 3rd-and-goal play when Terronez hit a wide open Darrin McElroy on a crossing route who took it to the end zone.

Adrian Montecinos' point-after made the score, 14-10.

Terronez finished the game 12-of-23 for 138 yards, while Hooper led Navy on the ground with 10 carries for 98 yards.

Defensively, Jeremy Harbaugh led Navy with 14 tackles, including two for loss.

"It will be good to have a bye next week so we can regroup," Maury said.

With next weekend off, the Midshipmen will return to action on Friday, Oct. 15 when they host Mansfield at Rip Miller Field at 7 p.m.
