• Charleston Shootout - Rd 2 (partially completed)
HOLLYWOOD, S.C. -- After a rough opening round in which the Midshipmen shot a 38-over par 326, the Navy golf team seemed to have turned the corner when the second round of action at the Charleston Shootout was suspended due to darkness. All five of Navy's golfers got in at least 14 holes of the second round before they were pulled off the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.
Junior Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) currently leads the way for the Midshipmen with his 7-over par 136 through 14 holes. Hayes opened up the day by posting an 8-over par 80, but with four holes remaining, he is 1-under and is tied for 43rd.
Sophomore Collier Jones (Little Rock, Ark.) turned in a 10-over par 82 in the first round, but his second-round score has moved him up in the standings. Like Hayes, Jones has 14 holes completed in the second round and is 6-over, giving him a 16-over par 144. Meanwhile classmates Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) and Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) are just on Jones' heels. Reilly, who was 7-over after the first 18 holes, is 11 over after 14 holes of action in the second round. He stands 75th, while Shield is two strokes behind in 78th with a 20-over par 155. Shield is just two holes shy of completing the second round.
Rounding out the field for the Mids is senior team captain Michael Harrigan (Moorestown, N.J.) who survived a disastrous opening-round 18-over par 90 to stand 81st in the standings. Holding steady with a 70 with three remaining holes, Harrigan is 28-over.
National power Georgia is scorching the 15-team field with its 9-under par 493, while Radford is in second with a 6-over par 496. The College of Charleston is just a stroke back in third with a 7-over par 498, followed by Stephen F. Austin in fourth (498, +11) and the host Charleston Southern (516, +14) round out the top five.
Georgia's Russell Henley and Radford's Michael Wade share the lead at 4-under, while Georgia's Harris English and Radford's Weston Eklund are tied for third at 3-under.
Monday's action begins at 9:30 am with the completion of round two before teeing off for the final round of action after the noon hour.
