• 2010 Charleston Shootout - Final Results
HOLLYWOOD, S.C. -- The Navy golf team concluded play at the Charleston Shootout on Monday afternoon by placing 15th in the two-day, 36-hole event played at the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C. The Mids carded a 101-over par 965 in what was just their sixth day playing outdoors (two practice days prior to two two-day tournaments) this spring season.
After the second round was called due to darkness on Sunday evening, the event picked up on Monday morning with the field finishing just a handful of remaining holes. Navy produced its lowest round of the tournament over the second 18 holes of play where it scored a 27-over par 315. Monday's round, however did not go the Mids' way as they turned in 36-over par.
Navy junior Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) was Navy's low finisher, recording an 11-over par 227 to tie for 47th. Hayes opened the tournament with an 8-over par 80, but came back to shoot back-to-back rounds of 73 (+1) and 74 (+2). Hayes has been Navy's low placewinner in each of its two tournaments this spring.
Improving four positions was sophomore Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.), who played his best round of golf over the final 18 holes. Reilly shot a discouraging 14-over par 86 in the second round, but regrouped and carded a 4-over par 76 in the final round to finish 25-over (241).
Collier Jones (Little Rock, Ark.), Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Michael Harrigan (Moorestown, N.J.) placed 79th, 80th and 81st, respectively. Jones and Shield, both sophomores, fell in the final standings after both players recorded a 15-over par 87 in the final round. Jones (82-81-87) finished 34-over, while, Shield (85-79-87) was 35-over. Meanwhile, Harrigan, the Mids' team captain, finished the tournament with a 46-over par 262.
Georgia crushed the field en route to winning the team title with an 18-under par 846. The College of Charleston placed second with a 2-over par 866, while Stephen F. Austin came in third with a 21-over par 885.
With high hopes of drier and warmer weather, Navy will utilize the next several weeks to prepare for its next tournament, the Lacrosse Homes Invitational, slated for March 27-28 in Grasonville, Md.
