Sprint Football Wins Opener, 24-0

Sept. 13, 2010

Box Score

FROSTBURG, Md. - Behind six interceptions from its defense, the Navy sprint football shut out Frostburg State, 24-0, in its season opener on Monday night at Bobcat Stadium. The Mids got picks from Zzmarr Stone (two), Mike Nolan, Will Parker, Ronald Allen and Brandon West as they improved to 63-2-1 in season-opening games.

"Well, obviously, defense was the flavor of the day," said Navy head coach Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC. "The defense was phenomenal across the board tonight. Our guys really played above their size."

The Mids held the Bobcats to just 89 yards of total offense, including just 28 yards on the ground.

Freshman kicker Adrian Montecinos gave the Mids all they would end up needing when he hit his first career field goal attempt from 29 yards with just over eight minutes to play in the second quarter.

Just three plays later on a third-and-nine play, Will Parker picked off Tyler Stevens' pass and took it 21 yards to the endzone as Navy extended its lead to 10-0.

After a sluggish third quarter, the Mids were poised to extend their lead when they took advantage of good field position and drove down to the Frostburg State one-yard line. But just minutes into the fourth quarter on a fourth-and-one play from the one-yard line, Jordan Foley was stymied by the Bobcats' Cory Bishop on a toss sweep to keep the game 10-0.

Two plays later tough, the Navy defense again rose to the challenge as Nolan picked off another Stevens pass and took it 25 yards to the endzone, untouched, to help Navy extend its lead to 17-0.

Navy sealed the game later in the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 73-yard drive that was finished off with a six-yard TD scamper by Denzel Reina.

Though it started slow, the Navy offense ended the game with 193 total yards. The Mids totaled 109 yards on the ground, many of which came in the second half.

"Our offense never seemed to get in a rhythm and we weren't executing," said Maury. "We really didn't seem to get tired as the game went on. That's a tribute to our conditioning - something we pride ourselves on."

Maury, who won his first game as sprint football head coach on Monday, was also pleased with the special teams unit.

"Our special teams were very good tonight," Maury said. "The kicking and punting games were solid, as was our coverage."

The Mids will open the 2010 home slate on Sunday (Sept. 19) when they host Catholic JV at 3 p.m. at Rip Miller Field.

Notes: Navy is now 26-1 against JV teams and now 7-0 all-time against Frostburg State.
