ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy sprint football team combined for just under 600 yards of total offense as it downed Catholic JV, 44-6, in its home opener on Sunday afternoon at Rip Miller Field. After coming away empty on their the first possession of the game, the Mids got in the end zone on their next three drives - all of which took no more than five plays each - en route to the 38-point win.
The start of Sunday's game was delayed by over one hour due Catholic's late arrival to the field, but the delay didn't seem to slow down the Mids.
"I thought we might have a bit of a lull to start the game, because of the delay," said Navy head coach Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC. "But, everyone stayed focused. We're preparing these young men for the unexpected."
The unexpected may have been just what the Navy offense needed. A week after compiling 193 yards of offense in its season-opening win over Frostburg State, the Mids offense came to life on their second drive of the game on Sunday.
Marty Meehan broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown run on just the fifth play of the drive to give Navy a 7-0 lead with under five minutes left in the first half.
On its next possession, Navy quarterback Tyler Terronez connected with JoJo Catrini for a 45-yard pass that set up an 18-yard TD run for David Williams on the next play, to make the score 14-0.
Williams' run capped a four play, 80-yard drive that lasted just 1:51.
The Mids used another big play to make it 21-0 in the second quarter - again with Terronez's arm. This time, the senior quarterback hit Kaleb Kaetterhenry for a 70-yard pitch-and-catch TD, capping a four-play drive that went 94 yards in just 1:48.
Terronez finished the game 8-of-17 for 215 yards.
Not lost in Navy's offensive explosion was kicker Adrian Montecinos, who connected on three straight field goals from 25, 18 and 22-yards in the second and third quarters to extend Navy's lead to 30-0.
Monticinos' performance tied a school record for field goals in a game as he became the seventh player in the program's history to do so. David Reifenberg was the last Mid to accomplish the feat as he booted three field goals in last season's win over Mansfield.
Williams made it 37-6 in the fourth quarter with his second touchdown run of the day - this time a 33-yard scamper.
He finished the day with 13 carries for 103 yards.
The Navy defense continued its strong start to the season as well on Sunday; Roviric Riel picked off a Kyle Weninger pass midway through the fourth quarter and took it to the end zone to seal the win, 44-6.
Roviric's interception was the third of the game, giving the Mids' defense a total of nine picks on the season, including three that have been returned for TDs.
The Navy defense held Catholic to only 197 total yards on Sunday.
"We saw some good things today," said Maury. "We had a much better week of preparation and it showed today."
The Midshipmen will have next weekend off before opening the 2010 CSFL schedule on Oct. 2 against Penn in the Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
"These last two games were huge for us," Maury said. "Going up against bigger guys is tough, but I think it gives us confidence heading into our league schedule."
