BEALLSVILLE, Md. -- Anchored by sophomore David Hall's (Huntersville, N.C.) 1-under par 70 in Tuesday's final round, the Navy golf team tied William & Mary for eighth at the 27th Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate played at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md. The Mids made a sizeable jump in the final standings after turning in a 9-over par 293 over the final 18 holes.
Navy opened up the tournament with a fifth-place mark of 304, but struggled to manage the course of the next 18 holes on Monday, sliding to 11th after the opening day of play. The Mids, however, regrouped and shot one of the lowest rounds on course Tuesday, to make their way back inside the top 10 with a 54-hole score of 909 (+57).
"I thought we proved today that we could play as well as any of the teams in the field if we focused and managed the course well," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "It took us a little bit to get settled and feel comfortable at what is a challenging course. Ultimately we played our best round over the final 18 and were able to push up in the standings."
Michigan State shot the low round of the tournament with its 5-over par 289 on Tuesday, tying West Florida with an 878 (+26). West Florida, however, was crowned the champion after the coaches agreed upon an alternate playoff system. The host Georgetown Hoyas were just one stroke back in third with a 27-over par 879, followed by Campbell (883, +31) in fourth and Xavier (898, +46) in fifth.
Meanwhile, Campbell's Vaita Guillaume continued to pace the field, adding to his lead on Tuesday after turning in his second-consecutive 4-under par 67 to take medalist honors with a three-round mark of 7-under par 206. Second-place honors went to West Florida's Thomas Guste-Pedersen, who registered a 2-over par 215.
Senior Tyler Kuhn (Louisville, Ky.) shot a 1-over par 72 in the final round, adding to previous rounds of 77 and 78 to finish 14-over (227) in 28th. Meanwhile, Hall made a remarkable move as Navy's fifth-place golfer on Monday to its second-place placewinner on Tuesday. Hall opened the tournament by shooting a 10-over par 81 before clipping off a handful of strokes Monday afternoon with his 6-over par 77. He was magnificent on Tuesday, however, shooting the low round of the tournament by Navy with a 1-under par 70 to pull into a tie for 29th, just a stroke behind Kuhn.
Senior team captain Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) also made a strong statement in Tuesday's final round, recovering nicely after posting an 11-over par 82 in Monday's afternoon session. Shield recorded a 3-over par 74 in the final round to finish 18-over with a 231.
Both Hall and Shield scored eagles in Tuesday's final round. Hall made a three on the par-5 10th hole, which was his first hole of the day, while Shield scored his second eagle of the fall when he made a three on the par-5 13th hole.
Freshman August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.), meanwhile, placed 42nd with each posting a 20-over par 233. Jonas had been the Mids' leader after the first day (153, +11), but scored a 9-over par 80 to slide back in the standings.
The Midshipmen will close out the fall season next Monday and Tuesday when they take part in the annual Service Academy Classic which will make its debut at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.
