BOSTON, Mass. - Navy's squash season came to an end Sunday suffering a 6-3 loss against Bates at the 2011 College Squash Association Team Championship in what was a disappointing end to a fantastic season by the Midshipmen. Navy dropped three straight matches at the national event, finishing the season ranked 16th with a 23-10 record.
"We did not have a good weekend of squash," said 11th-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "I feel terrible for our seniors to go out on this note, but they gave a great effort not only this weekend, but throughout the season and their careers. There are plenty of positives they provided this team and I thank them for their commitment."
One such senior, team captain Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio), closed out his career by scoring an 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 victory over Bates' Dae Ro Lee in his final match. Seidel put together a 5-1 record at the CSA Team Championship over the last two seasons. Seidel, who missed almost the entire season with a foot injury, posted a 5-2 record this season and ends his playing career with a 59-22 record.
Twenty-four hours after capturing a win over his St. Lawrence foe, sophomore Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) strung together his second-straight win at the team championship by defeating Nicholas Echeverria in straight games, 11-5, 11-6, 11-9. Bouchard led Navy in wins a year ago alongside classmate John Richey. He produced a 20-8 record this season and stands 46-15 over two years.
Also capturing a win in Sunday's team finale was second-year standout David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio). On Saturday, Koenig dropped a heartbreaker in five games and was nearly upset once again. However, Koenig held on to earn the win against Douglas Compton in five games Sunday. Koenig jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Compton came roaring back to pull even with Koenig and force a tie breaker. The Navy sophomore prevailed behind an 11-5 win in the fifth.
Senior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.), however, was on the other side of a five-game marathon match. After building a 2-0 lead behind identical 11-9 matches, Bates' William Katz won the next three games, 12-10, 11-9 and 15-13 to take the win at the No. 1 slot. Lutz, who owns a 24-8 record this season will likely represent the Mids next weekend at the CSA Individual Championship held at Dartmouth.
