Final Stats
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team improved its record to 7-2 on the season by posting a pair of victories Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Midshipmen first tallied a 7-0 victory over Drexel before notching a 6-1 win over Mount St. Mary's.
Navy began its day by needing just two hours and 20 minutes to post its victory over Drexel (4-3).
The Mids swept the three doubles matches from the Dragons to put the first team point on the scoreboard. After Navy's No. 1 team of Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded an 8-3 win over the tandem of Skyler Davis and Bryan Nguyen, the Mids claimed the doubles point when Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Anderson Walls (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.) defeated the combined efforts of Daniel Hansen and Badr Ouabdelmoumen by the score of 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Completing the sweep of the three matches was Navy's No. 3 team of Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Chris Kenney (So., Westlake Village, Calif.), which won an 8-3 decision over Dan Koehler and Jeganathan Srinivasan.
Navy then won each of the six singles matches in straight sets, with no Mid allowing one of their respective foes to win more than six games. Mark gave Navy its second team point of the afternoon when he won a 6-2, 6-1 match over Nguyen at No. 3 singles. Daniel recorded the third Navy point when he posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Paul Stauskas at the No. 5 flight. Clinching the overall team win for Navy was Burnett with his 6-3, 6-3 victory over Davis at No. 4 singles.
McDonald made the score 5-0 in favor of Navy with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Srinivasan at No. 2 singles, then Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win over Darius Frick at No. 6 singles. Closing out play on the afternoon was Rebersak with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ouabdelmoumen at the No. 1 flight.
"I thought we played fantastic," said Navy head coach John Officer of Navy's effort against Drexel. "We played with a lot of high energy and battled on every point. I felt Marcus had the toughest match out there, but he played extremely well in it. I think our match Friday against North Carolina (a 7-0 loss by the Mids to the No. 17 Tar Heels) gave us a lot of confidence. I am pleased with where we are heading."
Not long after finishing up its match against Drexel, Navy returned to the courts to take on Mount St. Mary's (0-2). The match between the Mids and The Mount would take a little more than three hours to complete.
Navy won the doubles point thanks to its two victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 flights. Mark and McDonald teamed up for their second win of the day at No. 1 doubles. The duo recorded an 8-3 win over Matthew Blake and Taylor Place. Navy's No. 3 tandem of Heyward Drayton (So., Valley Forge, Pa.) and Kenney secured the doubles point for the Mids with its 8-3 win over Patrick McGinley and Mike Zabetakis.
The No. 2 doubles match between Navy's duo of Rebersak and Walls against the Mount St. Mary's team of Adam Salam and Mike Salomon would be decided in a tiebreaker. Salam and Salomon would outlast Rebersak and Walls by the count of 7-5 in the breaker.
Mark would drop the first game of his No. 2 singles match against Salam, but then did not lose another game in recording Navy's second team point of the match. Quickly finishing after Mark was Kenney, who won a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Place at No. 5 singles. Gutsche then tallied Navy's match-clinching fourth point with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Zabetakis at No. 3 singles.
Alex Sisk (Fr., Clarksville, Ind.) soon won a 6-1, 6-2 match over McGinley at No. 6 singles, then McDonald posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Blake at No. 1 singles. The last match of the day saw Salomon, whose older brother, Ben, played tennis at Navy, win a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) match over Drayton at No. 4 singles.
"I think we were a little flat in the doubles matches," said Officer, "but we played well in singles. "Alex played a very motivated match at No. 6 singles, with Chris also playing well for us at No. 5. They were our players of the day."
Navy will take to the road for its next two matches. The Mids will first play Saturday at Furman before facing William & Mary one week from today.
"We are moving along and looking good," said Officer. "The teams we will play this week are two of the top six teams we will play the entire season. If we can play this week the way we did against North Carolina we will give ourselves a shot at winning them. But we will have to play well to do so."
