BOSTON, Mass. - The Navy men's indoor track and field team (8-2) scored 15.5 points to tie for 21st place at the two-day IC4A Indoor Championship at Boston University. Navy scored in the distance medley relay, 500m run and the mile run on Sunday and also the pole vault on Saturday. Cornell won the team title with 74 points and Connecticut was second with 59. Cornell also won the ECAC women's title this weekend.
"Overall it was nice to see our guys have some of their best performances of the year at this meet," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "We didn't do quite as well today as we did on Saturday but we had some good performances and the DMR guys did a very good job."
Navy's distance medley relay team placed second on Sunday with a season best time of 9:51.10, placing just behind Duquesne, who passed Navy right at the tape to finish in 9:50.80. Navy led the entire race before Duquesne caught them at the end. The quartet earned eight team points for the Mids.
The distance medley relay team lineup consisted of senior Ken Bunnell running the opening 1200-meter leg, senior Matt Evers on the 400, senior Lucas Connelly took the 800 and senior captain Dominic Della Pelle ran the anchor 1600-meter leg.
By placing in the top eight, Della Pelle, Evers, Connelly and Bunnell all earn IC4A All-East honors. Della Pelle now owns career six All-East certificates, Evers has four, Connelly has three and Bunnell picks up his second.
Evers also placed seventh in the 500m run, clocking a 1:03.70. Evers ran personal record of 1:03.55 in yesterday's 500m prelims and he earned his first career All-East accolade in an individual event.
Senior Jeremy Haney placed eighth in the mile run with a time of 4:10.96. Haney earns IC4A All-East honors in the mile run for the second straight season.
Junior Mitch Simmonds ran a personal record time of 8.10 in the semifinals of the 60m hurdles, the fourth best time in the semis. However, Simmonds placed ninth in the finals with a time of 8.30. The 8.10 in the semifinals was the third best time in school history.
Junior Kyle Satterwhite ran a 14:50.64 to take 24th in the 5,000m run and senior James Pearson was 26th at 15:02.09.
Senior Josh Houston cleared 6-6¼ (1.99m) in the high jump, tying for 11th place. Houston earned All-East honors in the high jump at the outdoor meet in 2010.
Senior Chris Boniwell competed in the shot put on Sunday, but fouled on each of his three attempts.
Sophomore Ryan Kochert and freshman Mark Vetere both earned IC4A All-East honors in the pole vault on Saturday.
Navy will open the outdoor track and field season on March 17 at Point Loma Invitational.
